    Christina Young Tartan

I just had to share this pic of my DD wearing her Christina Young tartan. It was made for her just last year and she wore it at the Halifax Highland Games two weeks ago for the first time in competition.

This tartan is taken from an arisaide woven in 1725. It has been officially adopted by the Young Clan as their Dress Tartan (just last year I think). It's very rare to find a kilt made from this tartan. My DD is only one of three dancers worldwide (that I know of) wearing this kilt for dancing.

    moved thread...

Since we're discussing a specific tartan & its history, I've moved this thread into the tartans and heraldry section.

    Regards,

    Drooling.

My list of Young tartans, in preference are:

    1. Young Weathered
    2. Christina Young
    3. Young Modern

Sadly, I can't afford neither. So I've decided I'll print the tartans using my large scale plotter and I'll make my own paper kilts.

All traditional and to the stripe mind you.

    Good for her!.

Very nice. My wife and I saw some of the dancers at the Chicago Highland Games a few weeks ago and decided that we were pretty lucky with the cost of our daughter's ballet costumes compared to what one of those outfits must cost. Hope your daughter did well at the competition she sure does look good up there.

That is a great dance tartan, but I think a bit too much white for regular use. I know I would drop ketchup on it sometime!

Thank you for posting the pic of the original tartan. I've never been able to find one!

You're right about too much white. I can't tell you how freaked out I get whenever she has it on. But, she absolutely adores it and that makes it worthwhile.

Let me tell you the story behind this kilt. My daughter has always liked bright, bright colours and fell in love with this (cute alert!!!):

We looked everywhere, called everyone and in the end Bent Needle Designs (http://www.bentneedledesigns.net/) contacted us and I purchased a kilt length. Imagine our shock however, when we opened the package and saw that it wasn't neon orange!! The daughter only took a few minutes to decide that she still loved it and still wanted orange as her vest. Talk about something hard to find. It took six months to find the tartan, it's over a year and we still haven't found burnt orange velvet....

Faced with a deplorable lack of love for burnt orange by the general population, the daughter decided on matching the purple stripe. Socks were made using this and I have to say, she made a great choice. I purchased wine coloured velvet and have yet to make up the vest (she's wearing a borrowed one in the pic). We can't decide on silver or gold yet. Silver looks great, but I'm thinking the gold might bring out the orange more. What's your opinions?

This tartan was only available in 10oz, making it a very light kilt. There's a 4" hem to add weight and make it swing. The sett makes the pleats quite deep, there's a full 7yds in it. A dancer my daughter's size usually has a 6yd kilt.
