    Pipes and Kilts

I have noticed looking through the various threads here that a number of our rabble are pipe smokers, at least in appearance. I am have my curiosity up now since I have been smoking my pipes for about 12 years now, and smoking them with a kilt for 3 years. How many of you out there smoke a pipe? what is your favorite; pipe, tobacco, tamper and lighter? As for myself I have two pipes that I love, one was a gift, a Bjarne that has lived in a pocket of my daily jacket for almost ten years and a hand carved Caminetto that I got for myself about three years ago. My tamper is just a small round piece of black oak that I picked up backpacking and kept using, and my lighter is a Corona "Old Boy" that is over ten years old and has never missed a light. The tobacco that I prefer in company is a Virgina burly called Windjammer, and when the fairer sex is not around a nice Dunhill 965. One of the best things abotu when i started wearing a kilt was this all fits in the sporran with my wallet, key and cell. To our Mods if this is in the wrong place feel free to move it. I view it as an accessory but others might not.

I was a pipe smoker, until I quit for good about 35 years ago. In the Navy it was really much easier to keep the pipe going when on a topside watch than trying to light a cigarette in gale force winds. I had a favourite French briar with an amber and ivory (real, not plastic) stem. I picked up in Algiers. The tamper I used was a 5/32" rivet I stole from the shipsfitter.

In some ways I still miss it. However, my wife developed asthma and a violent allergy to tobacco smoke (after I quit), so I have no intentions to ever going back. I liked a rather cheap burly, Granger, and I would try some of the "premium" blends, but generally went back to the Granger.

How did I miss that thread....

It's been awhile since I smoked my pipe. I bought quite a few when I was younger, they were always stolen from me by co-workers and clients. I've got two left, one I bought from a store called Blatter&Blatter (later on I learned that it was a lady's pipe, but it is still my favorite) and the other I bought for a 1$ in an old rundown second hand shop that was closing down. It's over a hundred years old and for some reason, it taste geat... but the barrel is way to big for me. I also bought a pair of WWI canadian millitary wool combat pants, 10$, almost mint. They have a tank quality to par with my Kilt...

i've been smoking a pipe for about a year and a half now. i now have 7 pipes.
my favorite one is my first one which i made from a kit for old virginia tobacco. it's a straight pipe with an apple shape, no finish, just smooth briar under my hand and it only gets non arromatic tobaccos.
my cheap little corncob pipe is great too. it gives a smooth smoke without any flavors influencing the flavor of the tabacco. they are great for trying out new blends. and if a corncob breaks, burns out, or goes bad you can just throw it out and get another.
all my other pipes are ebay ones that i have restored.
my favorite tabacco blend at the moment is called London Night at old virginia. it is a non arromatic and is great in any of my pipes.
my tamper is a cheap aluminum pipe nail. when i can find it. i think my car has eaten 3 of them. more often now it is the bottom of my WWI era trench lighter that was made out of a bullet casing.
