OK what if I am FAT

OK Here is the Deal. I weigh about 240 pounds. My waist (Wear I wear my Jeans) is about 40 inches. At the navel is 50 inches. I see where kilts are supposed to be up around the navel. I find this VERY uncomfortable. To keep the kilt up in place I have to tighten my belt This is actually quite painful. My first kilt was a cotton Sport kilt I just wear it on the hips, It is a little long but still comfortable. So does any one else have this problem? What do you do?

I, too, am "fluffy." I am able to wear my kilt at my navel pretty comfortably. My 11-year-old son (who inherited my lousy genes) is built almost just like me, and when he wears his kilt around his navel, he looks like a little old man who hikes his pants up under his armpits. So, he simply wears his below his tummy, around his pants waist.

My point: if you enjoy wearing it and do so with respect, then be comfortable, my good man. No one's going to drum you out of your clan because you don't enjoy being in pain.
Why, a child of five could understand this. Quick -- someone fetch me a child of five!

I agree. I am not fat- I am stout, thank you very much. I actually wear my kilt just a little above my natural waist and my natural shape tends to hold it in place. My sensei says I have the worlds strongest love handles...

I recently (last winter actually...) lost a bit of weight, but I keep my near the navel. Are you using a kilt belt or just the straps on the kilt? Perhaps that makes a difference, I don't know.

Thank you for the positive responses so far. I would like to hear from more of you.
Here are two pictures of me. As I said if I wear this kilt where it is the most comfortable it hangs really low.

If I pull it up to the center of my knees It would be around my chest.

Looks like you need a shorter kilt. Can you get that one hemmed?

If you want a tartan kilt that can be worn low on the hips and is custom made to your measurements, take a look at the Casual made by USA Kilts.
    See here: http://www.usakilts.com/store/cas_kiltpage.php

If you want to wear a kilt higher up at your natural waist and find a belt uncomfortable, the only alternative I can think of is suspenders (braces).
