Help dressing up a kilt, please?
I may be wearing my kilt over xmas at the families houses, which would mean I'd be in my Royal Stewart (I might try the 'asking for a SWK for Yule trick though) which I guess is rather 'festive' colored. I figure that means I ought to try to dress it up a bit.
That being said, I am thinking of going the 'soccer socks' route, (off white or dark green) with flashes. First problem, I can't seem to find any thready stating in words just where they are supposed to go. (Yeah, I know, on the legs...) as in to the front, outsides, etc.
Second, is it better to use a sweater or a button down shirt for the shirt? Or is it more of a 'try it on at the same time and just go with whatever looks decent'?
(I'd much rather have a Black Watch for that, but I ordered the Royal to go with my Halloween costume. Which I still need to get the pics from my wife)

Are you referring to the placement of flashes? There's a lot of pics floating around the forum showing them. I wear mine about two finger widths below the knob on the top of the shin bone, with the tails on the outside of the leg.

Sathor,
If you search the forum for "X Markers Dressy" and "X markers Casual" you will find threads that have scads of photos and ideas on how to accessorize, using shirts, vests, sweater, jackets, ties., etc. There is also an "X Markers Formal," but that is quite formal (think black tie at least.)
Happy hunting!

(Sorry, I don't know how to post a link in this message. But you should be able to find the threads easily.)

sathor,
Kilt hose are far thicker than soccer socks, I have tried using thinner socks myself and they just don't look right. I use tall athletic socks for hiking in my kilts (normally scrunched down) but not for nicer outfits.
Rocky sells some nice kilt hose for $20 a pair

I really think for a nice but not formal looking outfit for a Christmas Holiday you really ought to invest in a decent pair of hose. I would suggest navy blue.
It just so happens that today I am enjoying a rainy Saturday wearing my Royal Stewart kilt from Stillwater. I asked my lovely Flame-Haired Celtic Amazon Goddess if she thought what I was wearing would be appropriate for a family Christmas? She thought so and took a picture to show you.
Hmmm... I better fix that pleat!
I think that turtleneck shirts go wonderfully with kilts and are perfect for a holiday look.
Hope this was of help
Cheers
Jamie

Is that a standard or wool? (I guess I am going to have to get one of my wife's pics from her camera...)
I saw the post below say flashes at 10 and 2, but yours looks like 9/3 or is that just the angle of the shot, or just somewhere in that area?

Jerry only sells the Royal Stewart in acrylic so it is a Standard
I wear my flashes more at 9 O'clock / 3 O'clock position

I wasn't sure about that. I guess I need to explore his site better to find out what is available as what. I am of mindset that if I don't see something, it's probably out of stock.

I like the fencing jacket. Interesting combination.
Like you, I'll be wearing my kilt to family gathering for Christmas this year. I think I'll go the turtleneck route as demonstrated. Looks cozy and comfortable.

I went with it because it is rather similar to a chef jacket. The main differences are lack of a pocket and what is below the kilt.
