My wifes coming around
She had real limits with wearing the kilt originally, but she's breaking, slowly. My son and I wore ours out to shop last week, she didn't go along, but today I told her I was going to wear it again one day this weekend, but I would let her pick. She has said she doesn't want me to wear it on our 'family day' but our son picked out my shirt and decided I needed to wear the kilt today, and it 'matched' so he won.
The comments were about 50/50 today, the first was a guy that came up and asked about linage, and after saying I wasn't directly Scottish mentioned something about it must be comfy, but my wife thinks that after saying I wasn't Scottish that he was weirded out. The next two comments were rather downhill from there, the first was a woman at walmart that said 'skirt' and started laughing like I was a standup comic. Then a few feet later, a woman (ugly at that) said she hoped I had something dang warm under it (In a manner that suggested she had hit the bottle, or soon would be) but after that, pretty much all positive. One woman in an electric scooter stopped me and asked about it, she wants to get her husband one, since he was descended from highland (she said she was lowland) so I gave her one of my business cards (for hotsauce) with stillwaterkilts and xmarks websites written on the back.
My wife hasn't broken yet, and she still has restrictions, but its getting better...

One of my kilt mottos has been "Never take kilt advice by someone wearing pants". I think I'll add to that, "Never listen to comments about one's kilt from homely women at walmart" ;-)
Hang in there!!!!! At first my wife was unsure--now she's a BIG fan.

Yes, I agree. Wal Mart is what I refer as an ignormagnet. It draws ignorant people- a lot like malls.

I had just taken a drink when I read this line; needless to say my drink exited through my nose and all over my desk.
Thanks a ton.

Ah, ignore the peanut gallery at Mall-Wart! I'm sure they were smartly attired in stained jogging suits chasing after their brood of ten equally ugly children!

The first really positive comment about the kilt came from a Scotsman at that same walmart, about 15 feet from where today's two negative came from.

Wal-Mart seems like it would be a bad place to wear a kilt just because of the people who shop there. But its good to wear it often, especially if you're getting support.

Obviously we also shop at Wal*Mart, so I would be careful with blanket statements like the one you made.

Having read this thread and sniggered over some of the comments as well as reading many of the similar posts that deal with negative or derogatory comments and the replies and thoughts suggested by XMARKS members. And, having read those, sniggered or laughed until I could not see for the tears, I have come to the conclusion that sometimes we can be a right sarcastic bunch.
Long may it continue.
