Kilts as daily garb

Dear Friends:

I have been wearing kilts for more than a year. As a rule Sundays are kilt days and I also wear kilts when I work as a massage therapist at a clinic in the Santa Cruz mountains.

I wear my kilts for comfort. So I don't have a lot of the other accessories that are part of the Highland dress, just kilts. Mostly I wear a kilt, a t-shirt and sandals or some other shoes. For some formal occasions I've worn kilts and kilt hose but no sporran or Prince Charlie Jackets...etc.

I'm just curious how many of you out there wear kilts as daily garb, like wearing jeans or trousers.

At the clinic where I work on-call, I am permitted to wear kilts, at the school where I work as a Spanish teacher I am not permitted to wear them and at the religious school (Jewish/Reform and Renewal) I've worn kilts and there has been no disapproval.

I have been turned down to wear a kilt to the office. However, when I get home it is rare that I don't change into a kilt right away. On the weekend rarely wear anything else other than a kilt.

Boy, I wish I could wear a tilt to the office.

Not to work, but as soon as I get home, out to town, you name it. I rarely wear pants. I was even out doing some work outdoors in the snow last night, and was very comfortable, which was a shock! This is my first winter...

I wear a kilt on a daily basis, and have for close to two years now, I however do wear sporrans, hose, a sgian dubh etc. I can wear PC if the evening warrants it and have many Argyll jackets and the like. When I started wearing kilt I did it as an expression of my Heritage and so went out to do it the traditional way, I still am more comfortable dressed that way than any other. For those that know me it has just become what I wear, and has for the most part been accepted wholeheartedly.

I'm a banker and suits/ties are still the rage here. I know better than to think that I will ever get a chance to wear a kilt during work hours. I'm a piper and was asked to pipe at work for a couple of occasions. Those were the only times I was permitted to don the kilt. We have an annual Xmas party and a colleague wore his kilt. I was unable to attend; but later, I got word that the higher-ups were not pleased. Is it stuffy in here!

I go almost everywhere in a kilt unless there is a good reason not to. Wearing a kilt out and about here in Iowa does raise some eyebrows and occasionally generate a comment from a knucklehead, but not often. Most comments are positive. I tend to the conservative side with tartan kilts and brown leather with a button down shirt and a tweed jacket, and not usually just a tee shirt unless working.

My work is here, at home, by myself, for myself, so I can wear whatever I want. I have found the kilt to be a comfortable and practical garment for making swords. The sometimes in warm weather the work kilts are much lighter, self coloured, and that is all in the forge shop, save shoes. 50-60*C is not unusual in the summer for forge shop temperature. Plus the radiant heat. Thank God for big fans and Gatorade.

I used to not much care what I looked like, or what people thought of me. I still don't much care what most folks think of me, but I try to look presentable when out and about, and be polite and cheerful as much as is possible. It is not much more work, and the potential rewards are worth the effort. A kilt and a smile can lead to wonderful conversation and more.

I suppose I should mention that sometimes I only get away from the shop/house/farm once a week, on Sundays. Sometimes more, but not always. So I interact with others not my family less often that most, I suspect.

I wear kilts to my 8-4:40 mon-fri job. That's it At all other places at all other times I am in a kilt. The general explination is that if you are paying me at a rate I accept combined with other conditions that I must also be aggreable to, then I'll wear trousers. Otherwise I wear what I want to wear.

I did an experiment for a couple of months earlier this year in gardening while wearing a cotton kilt. It was comfortable and went well; though, I've gone back to the more disposeable jeans for that work. Sometimes I wear that kilt in place of shorts when working, though it is covered with an apron.

As far as the tartan kilts, those are for dressing up to me, and because of the ceramics work I do, that is not a daily thing.

I've been kilted now for 15 months. I recently interviewed (twice) wearing a kilt and was hired as Executive Director for a Community College Foundation. I'm now known as "the Kilt on Campus".

I also hace a PC, and two Argylls if I want to get formal.

Kilted during my waking hours for the last 5 months. Threw out my trousers 4 weeks ago.

Not literally, I donated them to the local clothes bank.
