Question about Fly Plaids and Kilts

I'm getting married in May, and being of scottish heritage, I want to incorporate something of highland dress in my outfit. I've considered wearing kilt, but it doesn't quite suit me. My question is, would if be acceptable to wear a fly plaid with more contemporary tux. (i.e. something with pants) Or is it a major faux pas to ware a fly plaid without the kilt. (and if so, does anyone have any other suggestions for what to wear?)

    Thanks,

Go for the kilt! The fly plaid is for dressing up kilts, it's very optional, and I've never heard of it worn with anything other than a kilt or trews.

I agree! Inexpensive kilts can be had if the cost is an issue. Look around on the boards, there are plenty of outstanding vendors who can help.

Oh, and welcome to X-marks the Scot!

    Tartan trews

You could go with tartan trousers, that always look sharp.

If not a kilt or tartan trews, you could try a tartan in your tuxedo tie and cumberbund and the ladies could wear a sash in the tartan to accent?

You can even buy the patterns by "burda" #3403 that has bowties, ties, vests, cumberbunds and get the items made by someone that can do the work? It would go with the tux.

    Hope that helps?

This is a great idea and it worked for my wedding. Neither of the fathers were willing to wear a kilt, so my mother ordered a bit of tartan fabric to match the kilts and made tartan bow ties and cummerbunds for the fathers. They were a hit and still matched the groomsmen and me.

Don't wear a fly plaid without a kilt. If you insist on a regular tux, you might consider a tartan bowtie and cummerbund. Several vendors offer them.

I don't think a fly plaid would look right with a regular tuxedo. Why not try trews? They are high-rise formal trousers made of tartan.

Definitely, go with the kilt; wearing a fly plaid without a kilt seems similar to, and perhaps even more unfortunate, than wearing a cowboy hat with sneakers.
Get one on, and walk it around at home; you might even surprise yourself, and decide to go kilted without the plaid! But with or without, declare your freedom.
Just don't waste your time listening to the timid nay-sayers; they don't have a clue!

Post an ad in the wanted section when you know what you want. Somebody might have it collecting dust in their closet.

    Thanks,
It is a major faux pas to wear a fly plaid with a tuxedo, I would say wear a kilt, with a Prince Charlie outfit or wear a tuxedo, but do not try to mix the two, there are several places that rent the entire outfit.

I would suggest the first link as Matt Newsome at the Scottish Tartan Museum is very knowledgeable and will be able to help you throughout the entire process.
