Protective kilts aprons

A REPRODUCTION kilt protective apron in khaki sold for £72 on ebay. I'm not even convinced that they really were ever issued. The www.whatpriceglory.com Canadian WW1 version ($18) only covered the front. Soldiers complained about the problems of their military kilts getting waterlogged etc without having a load of canvas to cart around as well.

£72! Heck, that's the cost of a kilt!

First of all yes 72 quid IS a bit high for a repro, especially when you can get a repro (like this one) from Shiperfrabrik for 25.00.
However, the military DID issue these full kilt aprons, the biggest problem was that kilts were very pricey, yet at this time still purchased by the war department. So, the aprons were used to help preserve the kilt. Also, another complaint was that during the winter, the bottom edge would freeze and then start to actually cut into the bare legs, so once again the kilt apron hung down PAST the bottom of the kilt to try and combat this.
Here is a picture of a group of soldiers from the LIverpool Scottish WWI. Also notice how high some of these lads are wearing the kilt, AND the braces being worn with them.

If you will look closely at the man nearest the camera you'll see that the braces are supporting his apron, not the kilt.

Wow! Thanks for that information and what an extraordinary picture. I have heard that braces were not that uncommon as they allowed far more movement especially with a high rise Military kilt. But I wonder what on earth those guys were lining up to do!?

Yes, they most certainly were issued, in both the South African (Boer) War and WWI. I have even seen a picture of a Commando wearing one over his kilt on the St. Nazaire Raid in 1942.
