Kilts in the Office

Hi everyone: I've been granted permission (yeah!) to wear a kilt to the office on some of the major Scottish holidays. I was planning to continue to wear a standard dress shirt and the kilt/hose will take the place of trousers. We don't have to wear ties (business-casual) so I just wanted to keep it low-key and not go all-out with formal attire. Any thoughts? Thanks! Kyle

That's the joy of running your own business, I can wear what I like! I can't imagine having to get permission to wear what you like.
Course, in Ottawa you just have to point out that we are very "multicultarally" minded and everyone just goes with the flow.

I seem to dress nicer when I wear my kilt to school than what I wear for the other four days. Fridays are dress down days and the other teachers wear varying degrees of jeans, t-shirts etc. I wear one of my kilts, sporran, good hose, a dress shirt(oxford button down collar type), sometimes a tie, a nice pair of shoes and feel great. I always tend to get "dressed" up when wearing the kilt. If I got dressed up "formal" for school, my students would start to wonder if I was doing drugs.

I'm happy for you. Going less formal seams to me the right way. This way you're just saying "I'm dress as usual but kilted. Nothing special."

And that's the best way to look at it. What do you normally wear with your trousers? That's what to wear with your kilt. If you normally don't wear a tie, do the same with a kilt. Although a kilt dresses up very nicely, you don't have to.

Exactly. I more or less take the same attitude, although my employers and I made a deal- if I wanted to wear my kilts, I can wear them as often as I like (and I wear them daily) but I couldn't wear anything more casual than a polo shirt with them. I used to wear the occasional Iron Maiden t shirt, so I had to give that up so I could go kilted. My employers are very culturally minded, and they have often gotten compliments from clients. There was one client who was taking a tour, came into my office, and said "Wow! I never thought about wearing my kilt to work!" My company owner said to him "You wear those things?!?!" He said that he has Scots ancestry and has two, and was considering a Utilikilt. I've overheard clients commenting that I ad an extra touch of class to the office as well.

So to get back to the heart of my response here... I say yes! Just wear what you would normally. The kilt is such a beautiful and classy garment that it will take care of itself.

When I have worn a kilt to the office I have teamed it with a normal business shirt and tie, with an Argyle jacket in place of the normal business suit jacket.

Ironically, the last two times I've had my Royal Stewart (or staurt or whatever the right spelling is, it all sounds the same when spoken aloud) I've worn my black Aqua Teen Hunger Force tshirt, which has a milkshake, fries, and a ball of meat, all armed for battle. I'll need to get a pic after it gets out of the laundry.
