    How to wear Hose Tops?

I've seen these for sale on ebay:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=260354341717

How do you wear these? With short white or red socks? Is this an old-fashioned way to get the look of diced hose, or a recent innovation?
    Cheers,
    John

I was told that hose tops are to be worn with spats, and as it says, they are for pipe band members etc. Don't know much more.
    Hope that helps.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Ted is right. Diced hose tops are generally worn with spats, and khaki hose tops with puttees.

Spats hide the point where hose tops end and socks/hose/whatever's underneath begins.

Hose tops are only worn with spats or puttees. There is some argument about whether you first put on your socks then pull on the ho'tops, or put on the ho'tops and then your socks, but I doubt it really matters much-- rather like the question concerning gentlemen with long beards-- do they sleep with them under the blankets or over the blankets?

Another topic that seems to come up regularly. I have suggested previously that they might look good with taller combat/logger type boots (8-10"). So far no one has commented on this idea, nor has anyone posted any photos.

I know the general opinion here on the board is to wear these type of boots with scrunched hose, but I personally think they look fine with hose worn up, and practically, I can't stand wearing hose scrunched as they always end up scrunched inside the boots and around my heels when I do.

Anyone have an opinion? Anyone have some hose tops and 8-10" boots willing to try it and post photos?

I wouldn't; remember hose tops are more of a kit item for soldiers & pipe bands; unless you're reenacting a Jock from the Boer War, where diced hose tops were worn with issue boots, I just don't think it would look "right".

Diced hose in mufti are really designed for formal attire, so combining them with a hiking boot might be a bit OTT, in this bluff old traditionalist's opinion.

I know diced hose are traditionally worn for formal occasions now, but I expect that has something to do with the cost. Here is a pic I stole from another thread of diced hose being worn in a casual manner.

I think it looks good and I think this same outfit would look good with brown boots as I described. In that case you could wear hose tops instead of full diced hose. If I were wearing it, I'd have tucked the sweater in and worn a belt, in addition to my brown logger boots.
