First Steps
Nearly 50 hours have passed since my wife insisted I purchase my first kilts.
Granted, they were UKs, but yesterday I wore the tan one while running errands and while having a couple of pints at a local pub. Today I wore the black one while bird watching (bald eagles) at a nearby wildlife sanctuary.
Here's the cool part: No one in my travels said a word. I'm going to take a positive outlook here and assume that people in the lower 48 are starting to become accustomed to them. Even my kids hardly even noticed.
So, to those who went before me, here's a hearty thanks.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

I have noticed that it usually is a non issue if you have confidence and walk proud.

Ha ha! You're still counting by the hours? Wait 'til you start counting by the kilt.

If you skip steps, you end up making up for it in other ways.
I also skipped 6 & 10 but made up for it by buying a sgian with a hand-carved African black wood handle with sterling mounts and an amethyst in the hilt with a damascus blade forged from a used Harley-Davidson chain.
I also have my second custom fur sporran on the way (this one a badger from Thorfinn Custom Sporrans).
So, not making your own kilts and buying a fly plaid don't let you off the hook.

Expat2011-I've always received more positive comments than negative ones when I go kilted about in Salt Lake. Looks like there's enough of us kilties in the northern Utah area to have a kilt night.

Welcome to the rabble and the wonderful world of kilts. You are counted a lucky man to have a wife so supportive.
I just spent the whole day satuday kilted and only received one negative comment, and most of that day was spent at the local mall with my wife and kids (who were also kilted). So maybe folks are getting to be more accepting of the kilted culture.
It might have helped that the boys (5 & 7) and I also walked around like we were ready to kick some a&& if we received a cross word.
