    Non-Trad Kilts at SCD

In recent weeks I have given some of my contemporary kilts an outing to Scottish Country Dance clas in place of the traditional Scottish tartans. My Utilikilt, R-kilt and Freedom Kilts cargo model have all been to the dance hall.
Re-action of a few of the dancers has been to ask why I am wearing a skirt rather than a kilt, some of them had not seen modern style kilts before.
Last night my usual dance partner said she prefers when I wear a traditional kilt as she gets hit by the cargo pockets of the non-trad kilts as they swing during the dances (I usually have my money in my right hand pocket). I asked was this not also a problem with the sporran but she said that no, the sporran never got in the way.
It would be interesting to hear others views/experiences of contemporary kilts for dancing.

I've never worn a contemporary kilt dancing, in fact when I wore a 5 yarder in the summer some in my class looked askance, not to mention what they thought of the box pleated kilts.

If she's being honest about the pocket problem, then I'd leave the nontrads at home. I wonder if she just doesn't like it and doesn't want to risk hurting your feelings.

But my gut reaction was, if you're just wearing the nontrad for practice and donning the tartan for performances and competitions, I don't see a problem.

Get an Amerikilt. They're similar to UK's, and don't have the cargo pockets.

    Alex,

I had a great lot of fun one evening at SCD class wearing the X Kilt Alan H made for me. The week prior one of our members had mentioned "these strange new kilts made of all sorts of material...even camouflage!"

Well with that sort of challenge I had to respond!

    It went over quite well.

Now if only someone would mention a pink kilt....

    Cheers

    Jamie
