Clan Gunn

Hello everyone,
I have just signed in and wish to express how happy I am to have joined this site. In fact, I was searching for more info on Clan Gunn and came across a few messages from this site discussing the Clan Gunn DNA project. Since my Wilsons come from the north-east of Scotland (Banffshire), 18th century, I think I have a good reason to think that I might descend from the Gunns myself. If Clan Gunn is one of your concerns in genealogical terms, please contact me, too.

Hi Eduardo,

Firstly, welcome from Norfolk in eastern England.

Secondly - Clan Gunn. My wife, Margaret, is a MacLeod on her mother's side, but is related somewhere back in the mists of time to the Gunns. So much so that all the first born sons on her mothers side were all called Neil Gunn MacLeod. Margaret's mother married a Dugdale and her son (Margaret's brother), who is the oldest child is a 'Neil Gunn Dugdale'. When that brother had a son, he became Jamie Neil Gunn Dugdale. Our son is called Craig Andrew. It was only when Margaret's mother was in the last few weeks of life that a lot of the family history came out. By then Craig was 16 years old and of course was far too old to start changing. He is now 24 and is half way through a three year paramedic course. He has let all his work colleagues know that his nickname is 'engee' (NG). He is toying with the idea of having his name changed by deed poll to Craig Neil Gunn. Funny how history exerts an influence.

Welcome to the forum. I'm fortunate that my great grandmother was a MacWilliam and although stopping in Ireland for a few years, the family is originally from Scotland, "far North" is what the family stories are. MacWilliam is sept of Gunn, so Clan Gunn it is for me! Several years ago my brother and I, dressed as Jacobite, escorted the commander of Clan Gunn into the Stone Mt. Games. It was a great honour. He and his wife are grand folk. Recently, while my wife and I were in Hawaii, I was wearing a t shirt with SCOTS written across the front (at the Kilauea Volcano) and a fellow walked up and said, "What clan?" I remarked proudly, "Gunn". "AHH", he said, "I'm Al Gunn from California. VP of the Gunn Society". Well, I had read of this man from the Gunn Clan newsletter and we talked for a bit, signing off with, "Pax Aye!" It's a small world! Malcolm
