    New Japanese tartan

This one seems to have slipped under the radar - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/...ds/7572244.stm

Not sure I would be into pink mind you.

I was of the understanding that "dress" versions of tartan tend to substitute one prominent color with white. As the green and pink are so light in color I can see Mein's thinking that it looks to be along the lines of a dress tartan.

If you have seen the highland dancers at the games most of them sport dress versions of their tartans. It has to do with convention and something about how the judges see them at a distance I believe.

    Cheers

Aw, man! Not this topic again!

How could ANYONE want a tartan that looks like this:

It's hideous. And the fact that someone designed something so ugly for Japan just makes me angry. Not EVERY FLIPPIN' DESIGN needs to look like it was designed by Sanrio as a Hello Kitty product, you know! Geez!

Besides, several "Japanese" tartans already exist. There is the Sachie Hara tartan, http://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/tar....aspx?ref=3633

OR, the Japanese might want to try the Douglas clan tartan http://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/tar...s.aspx?ref=956 (for the reasons mentioned in the Sachie Hara tartan description)

Another appropriate tartan for Japan is the MacDonald tartan, in honour of Ranald MacDonald:

    ...

Are we a bit Eurocentric in our sense of aesthetics?

Jamie, thanks for the mention, but I did NOT utter the word "dressy". Mipi did.

    I noticed that too.

Guess you're both kiltmakers with the letter "M" or something.

Very interesting. The artical didn't seem to suggest it would be used for kilts, so much as mini skirts and girl's school uniforms in Japan. Glad the Japanese will now have a tartan, though.
