    April 6th - Tartan Day - Who's Particpating

    Hello Rabble,

In the US and Canada April 6th is Tartan Day. The day set aside to celebrate the Scottish countributions to the growth of our countries.

I am going to work kilted. Anyone else? Any events planned?

Based on the proposal I submitted to management at my office, April 6th is one of two days I get to come to work kilted. The other is November 30th (Feast Day of St. Andrew). This will be my first kilted day at work, hopefully leading to many others once they see it's not a big deal!

My manager, for some reason, has danced around the issue for quite some time. However, my supervisor is absolutely fine with it. My manager is kind of a prick anyway. I'm gonna keep pressing the issue with him though . Hopefully, he'll say OK but, we'll see .

It's easier to beg forgiveness than to ask permission. Don the tartan proudly, lad.

But unfortunately, it's easier to ask permission than to find a new job.... so alas I will not be going to work kilted....

If my new kilt is here by Friday I think I'll give it a try on Monday.

I expect I'll take some flak from the boss, my co-worker has already seen me kilted a couple of weeks ago when the boss was out of the office.

I'm a bit puzzled about the number of people who have said they are prohibited from wearing a kilt. If they are in an office like environment and there is no safety reason (such as working with rotating machinery) I don't understand the grounds for a prohibition. If women can choose to wear a skirt or pants, then why should a guy not have some freedom of dress?

Understand, I don't work in HR and there are undoubtedly things I don't know about regulations that might govern such behavior. Can somebody shed some light on the question?

    Thanks.

Proclamation by the President: National Tartan Day, 2008
"NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim April 6, 2008, as National Tartan Day. I call upon all Americans to observe this day by celebrating the continued friendship between the people of Scotland and the United States and by recognizing the contributions of Scottish Americans to our Nation."

I think it's safe to press the issue!

    Cheers,
