Leather
So- along with my dirk and sgain dubh project, I'm also making a targe. I can't seem to find anywhere that sells leather by the yard. So- all you more experienced DIY'ers- where do I get my leather?
Thanks!!

I have seen leather by the hide at uphostery retailers. You might also look at www.tandyleatherfactory.com.

Generally leasther is sold by the sq. ft. The more expensive is the double back as you get a good chunk. Alternatively a side can be had for a reasonable price (looks like a map of the States). most of them are sold in the 15-23 sq. ft size.

Check this out. Not by the yard, but I think you'll find what you need.

find a local cordwainer (maker of custom fine leather shoes) or cobbler (shoe repairman). the local 1 here sells to me all the time. i get 2-3 sq ft pieces at 9-10oz for about $20. I can make about 3 pairs of water hardened bracers out of a piece that size. just plan it out ahead of time on cardboard so as not to waste any of the quadrupedal ruminant bovine epidermis.
sorry i love big words
hey, jim....i will be in Atl this weekend.....you going to the Ren Faire????? drop me a line and let me know.....i will be there fri-sun

You might want to try rawhide as opposed to leather. Boiled, it becomes as hard as a rock and was used by First Nations People as shield material all by itself. As a outter layer for a Targe it would make it almost bullet proof.

I'm an addicted leatherworker, myself. I buy all my leather at Tandy...'course, it helps that my wife works at the local store, but the people at Tandy are usually really helpful with help, advice, tips and tricks, etc.

Last time I bought leather I got it from www.theleatherguy.org . Good service and great prices, but you have to know what you want.
