A funny thing happened on the way to get a kilt.....

I was all set...on my way to getting a kilt, when I got sidetracked into making a sporran. Of course, other accessories were needed, so I made a belt buckle. Cavscout and Matt Newsome have encouraged me to make more of these.

In heraldry, a Cross fleury is a cross adorned at the ends with flowers, generally with Fleur-de-lis, Trefoils, or some other distinct shape. Also called a Cross Flory, or Flourished Cross, this cross depicts the thistle, the national flower of Scotland.

This cross is often associated with Crusaders and the Crusades. The heraldic cross pattée was used by two Crusader orders: the Teutonic Knights, and the Knights Templar who adopted a red cross on their white robes in 1147. Still today some modern Freemason organizations use the pattée in an official manner.

Thank you all for your kind and encouraging words. It is amazing how much time and effort it takes to create something de novo. Well, it's not like I had to mine the copper, but....

At the same time, the creation process is fulfilling in and of itself. I have thought about the possibility of selling these to people who want a hand-crafted buckle, or brooch or pin. I- like others- appreciate the look and feel that is apparent in hand-crafted belts, sporrans, hose, and bonnets. And shoes! There are certain elements about items that you make for yourself, or that you have another person make for you, or that you make for someone else, that goes well beyond the norm. That is probably why some kilts are handmade, and some bamboo fly rods are too!

Fleur de Lis is French for “flower of the lily”. While it is an enduring symbol of France, the Fleur de Lis has been used across Europe and the UK for hundreds of years.

As a religious symbol, it may represent the Trinity or be an iconographic attribute of the archangel Gabriel, notably in representations of the Annunciation. In such contexts, the fleur-de-lis is associated with the Virgin Mary.

The symbol is also often used on a compass rose to mark the north direction, a tradition started by Flavio Gioja, a Neapolitan mariner of the fourteenth century.
