What I did this weekend
I had a kilt made for me several years ago by someone who didn't know how to do it properly. The pleats were all too shallow and, to top it all off, the material was wrong side out. I should have known when she gave me back the remainder of the material, all 6 yards of it. So I took my pocketknife to it last week and disemboweled it completely. The only piece I saved was the main section of the material. After looking at some of the instructions on a few websites and a few forum threads here, I started making my own version. Once I did the required math, it would end up with about 25 pleats, not counting the first and the two reverse pleats. Here it is laid out on my table.

Here's a pic of my sporran. It was a leather purse in another life. I took my knife to it also and rebuilt it into this. I had to make the two outside tassels to match the center one. 
Lastly, here's my kilt pin. It was a 3" duplex nail in another life, until a took a hammer and file to it. 
I'm very pleased with the end results. If you make it to the Texas Scottish Festival next month, you'll see me sporting them proudly.

Glad to see you were able to salvage that kilt material and it came out quite nicely. The kilt pin is so cool! Now you've got me thinking. . . what can I beat flat. . . has a great "work out your frustrations" appeal to it! Not to mention I've always been a fan of the "bigger hammer" philosophy.

A great job reworking... and readapting!! Talk about recycling. The results are really excellent.
Man, I wish I could do work like that... I'm not bad with a hammer, but get me near a needle and thread and expect cursing and bloodshed.
