How low does the sporran hang?
I had the opportunity to be at a "black tie" event the other night. I put that in quotes because the invitations weren't explicit and it was with a bunch of people I see most weeks and who don't normally get dressed up that much anyway...
That said, I followed the guidelines in another thread about The Kilt Looks and bought a bow-tie to go with my Stillwater Shadow Tartan, a white shirt I already had, a second-hand jacket that I didn't have time to convert into an Argyll, white long socks I've had for ages and a Nightstalker sporran. Yes, there was a budget. And it was the first time I'd gone out wearing a sporran.
So where does the thing hang? Is it supposed to fall between your legs when you're sitting? Or is it meant to hug the front of the kilt higher up?
And while I think of it, how heavy should it get? Mine had my wallet, keys, phone and a handkerchief and I wouldn't want it any heavier than that! It was also quite full... I don't think an iPhone would have fit instead of my SE G900.
Wade.

I prefer a sporran that is higher rather than lower for a couple of reasons. First is that it's a pocket on a strap, not a fig leaf. And second, it is neither a sling. I don't think it should hang any lower than the widest part of one's abdomen, if he's a gentleman of substance. When it does hang low, it either bounces against the privates, or draws the apron in around one's middle, which wrinkles the kilt and shows off your figure 9 body.
Regards,
Rex.

Higher is my preference also.
I'm more of a figure 1 and a low sporran always feels to me as if the strap is about to slip below my hips (through the back loops or no).

I like McMurdo's Rule...hmm, McMurdo's Rule, sounds like a theorem...anyway, I like that position for standing. For sitting, I push the sporran to the side for comfort.

I grow fig trees... I could literally go pick a fig leaf and put it on the front of my sporran. Some of them are bigger than a sporran.
That being said, it would be funny to have a fig leafe embossed into the leather of a sporran. It would look a tiny bit like a grape leafe.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

Actually, Ted, I have seen one of these in a photo online somewhere about two or three years ago. The leather was dyed leaf green, too. I nearly posted it here, but I felt that it was a little too literal for the mood here at the time. I looked for it again just now, but all I turned up were a few oak leaf interpretations that give nearly the same effect. Wouldn't mind if someone found it again to let me know.

The general rule I've heard is 4 fingers or a hand width below the belt, of course it can go slightly higher or lower depending on personal preference.

I tend to wear mine about two and a half to three fingers below the belt. I think it just looks and feels better with my body type. Experiment in front of the mirror with some different heights and see what looks and feels right to you. But like McMurdo said, four fingers is the general rule that I think a lot of us have read and heard, start there and adjust as you feel necessary. When I was a little bit thinner, I wore my sporran a little bit lower than I do now.

Good advice there, providing the kilt is made to traditional specifications. I am not being snooty here, but as the waistline of "modern" style kilts are lower, the above advice might not hold sway.
