Veterans Day at Carlisle Airport, Sunday 5th July

Yesterday was Veteran's Day at our home airport when military veterans and their families were treated to free military themed displays (and free tea and buns for those wearing their medals). I was on duty at the air museum, taking turns at supervising access to the Canberra but it was only after the crowds had gone and we had closed the Canberra up for the night that I was able to obtain a kilt photo at my station.

The Home Guard protected the entrance.

The Victory in Europe Re-enactment Association put on a display of jeeps, artefacts and weaponry.

Two world war 2 veterans. The gentleman on the right flew Hurricanes and Spitfires, including reconnaisance flights before and during the battle of El Alamein.

Aged over ninety and still going strong.

This old soldier served with the army in Malaya.

The veterans brought along their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Some war veterans found the day enjoyable but tiring.
This world war 2 veteran was accompanied by a younger, cold war era, veteran who looks concerned, but all was well, the old boy woke just after the photo was taken.

The Rolls Royce Welland jet engine was run up several times.

Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire which performed a display.

Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Dakota

Later the Dakota performed a few flypasts, with its door open as if ready to drop parachutists.

A queue formed to visit the Vulcan.
The local air cadets got involved marshalling traffic and car parking.

    F-4 Phantom

The other warplanes also proved popular attractions.
    That's all folks.

Great pics! The re-enactors did a bang-up job on the displays! I always enjoy seeing old warbirds, too. When I was stationed at SAC Hdq. at Offutt AFB in the late 70's, Vulcan bombers would regularly fly in for training. I always thought those big delta-winged beauties looked cool.
