Wore a kilt to work today

I wore a kilt to work today. I work for the Federal government and we're expected to dress in a professional manner since we meet with officials from other agencies, to include Congress, so wearing a kilt on a routine basis isn't considered acceptable attire. But I can wear it on occasion, especially on days like St Andrew's or Robbie Burns birthday. Today I just felt like wearing it since I'd just returned from Scotland and wanted to wear it.

I noted with some pleasure that I got a LOT of attention from the ladies. I fear a few risked injuring their necks from the double-takes, and at least one jumped out the elevator for a better look. One was struck almost speechless, just staring and going "Oh, my!" several times. A few came over to get a better view or ask questions. One said she like to wear a kilt but wasn't Scottish, which invited a discussion on non-clan tartans and tartan skirts (vice a kilt). One women asked me about being hot and I mentioned that a kilt had good air circulation - something she should already know about - which got a good laugh.

Most of the men said nothing, though quite a few smiled and said "hello" or something similar. Two good friends jokingly called it a skirt (which I then suggested were fighting words) - before they admitted that they weren't "man enough" to wear a kilt since it drew a lot of attention. One said he'd like to wear a kilt but wasn't Scottish and I told him of the Air Force tartan (he is retired Air Force) and his eyes lit up with some interest, so I may have made another convert.

Our resident Scot liked seeing a kilt in the building and this led to a discussion of kilts, my recent trip to Scotland, the Gathering, and the like. Now that I've worn mine, he may wear his at some point (he is a MacGregor) and perhaps we'll start a trend.

All in all, it was a good day.

Very cool! My brother works for the EPA in Atlanta and wears his kilt to work virtually every day. He started doing it for St. Andrew's day and other "kilt holidays" and it gradually morphed into full-time.

The more of us going kilted at work, the more people will understand that the kilt can be an every day outfit and not just for special occasions or a fancy dress (as many believe it is).
