Where to order from...

Well, the time has come to order my very own kilt. There are a few in the closet, but having recently discovered my heritage coming from Clan Campbell, I want to order a kilt in that tartan.

So, what I am looking for is a great kilt in Ancient Campbell Tartan, I will simply be buying 54" cloth with a bare minimum of 3 yards, but I would prefer 4 yards so I can have more pleats. I know I shouldn't really skimp for a good kilt, but I really want to keep the cost under $100.

You're going to have a hard time finding that much yardage for $100. I hope it works for you, though.

Celtic Croft has that tartan in their 'homespun' wool line, that's a good choice for greatkilts, $30 per yard 54" wide.

I'm pretty sure that since your heart is set on Campbell Ancient, the homespun Zardoz linked you to is your best bet. You'll not find that tartan any cheaper anywhere that I know of.

If you aren't in a hurry you can haunt ebay. There are some tartan sellers there that offer fabric for pretty good deals, though I don't remember the last time I saw Campbell Ancient.

I think you're going to have a very difficult time making a kilt from anything less than four yards, and that will probably be a box pleat, which is perfectly fine. If you want a lot of pleats, you're going to have a hard time getting them with four yards of fabric.

I'd encourage you to look at USA Kilts, as Zardoz suggests. And it's in polyviscose -- washable, comfortable and convenient as all get-out.

It does seem like an ambitious mission but with the right compromises, do-able it seems.

I think he has double-width fabric in mind... in which case wouldn't four yards of it (equivalent to eight yards single) be plenty? Even three yards (six in single) should be ample, methinks.
