Really little guy in a kilt

What a surprise when I arrived at the church festival to find one of the young kids in a kilt. His father told me he just decided to wear it. After I gave an short lesson on what should be in front on a kilt I decided that he deserved some encouragement. I gave him a very small sporran that I made a few years ago and a kilt pin.
Then I had to deal with a lady who told him that little boys don't wear skirts. He was confused and his parent told him it was very proper for a boy to wear a kilt and I made sure the lady involved got some cultural education as she was from Ethiopia.

My thirteen year-old has just announced he wants to wear his kilt to the school fancy dress disco, as a Braveheart character! It was only a few weeks ago that he wore his kilt in front of two male classmates when we went for a day out in the capital.

My nephew's friend wore his kilt to school in Woodbridge, Va. The school told him it was a costume and he had to go home and was forbidden to wear it. That school is just a few miles outside of Washington DC. They have students from all around the world, who wear native clothes, not considered pants.

Bear in mind, I heard this from my brother, who heard this from his son. By the time the information gets to me I can no longer verify the details.

I think that it is a difficult job when a young lad wants to put on a kilt. Kids like dressing up. Go round any supermarket, there are outfits for Batman, Superman, Spiderman, The Joker, The Hulk, Sponge Bob Square Pants, Ben 10, Dora the Explorer and and and, the list goes on and on.

The trick is convincing the lad that the kilt is something special and it is not 'dressing up'. I don't think that there is a golden answer, just lots of support and positive re-enforcement. Then, who knows? a kilt wearer in the making.

Well it's not too outstanding when you consider how many of todays cartoons have characters wearing kilts with no complaint from any other characters. Thats positive reinforcement in spades I can't say if it works as my only child is a Girl and wears her Kilt for Highland dancing.
