Steampunk kilts

Hi, all!

In recent times I've discovered the world of steampunk. Aye, even as age 50 fast approaches (I'm young at heart)! If you do a Google or a Wiki, let alone a Youtube, you'll see that it's all about a retro look at fiction, art, music and fashion. Much of it's lead is taken from a world where steam was king, most often the Nineteenth Century, and brings it into the 21st!

As for kilting, I've always admired the modern fabrics and designs used by some. I wonder if this example of how adding some pieces that are 'made to last' (a key steampunk mode) grabs you:

I'm a fan of the steampunk style too. I think kilts are a perfect fit.

I actually like that look quite a bit. I think I could do without the two gears sewn to the front, but otherwise it's rather nice.

Ah, a fellow steampunker! I'd give my eye teeth for that kilt! I like the tough style with decoration stuck on. This is weird for me as I'm normally such a trad where kilts are concerned!

The gears are an integral part of the steampunk look. They're big into gears and cogs and anything brass or copper. If you do a Google or You Tube on steampunk fashion you'll see what I mean. It's a sort of refined retro-Victorian punk thing, though 70s punks'd run a mile from it! Here's a start:

Incorporating it into kilting is really mixing and matching a 19th and 21st Century look. Knowing that at least two of the guys in Abney Park (from Seattle, no surprise there!) wear kilts will sell it to their crowd, that's for sure!

Maybe it's what us ageing hippys like me turn into in our old age!

I'm a big steampunk fan and I'm doing a full costume for Halloween, hopefully I'll be able to find enough elements to make it say steampunk, rather than just messy Victorian.

Oh, I understand it's part of the look. Generally speaking I like the way they incorporate the mechanical aspects of the genre. It's just that (in my opinion) the large gears on the front of the kilt are a bit much. Please don't misunderstand - I do like the kilt, and maybe after looking at it a while I'd change my mind about the relatively minor issues I have with it.

I see where you're coming from. I suppose I particularly like it as decoration, maybe in place of a kilt pin. I think every kilt needs something on the front whether it's an attachment that's pinned on or sown on like the gears. On this kilt I feel it's a nice contrast to the background colour and adding the rivets goes well with the rest of the accessories.

Having taken a peek at your blog I can see why you like all the engine stuff!

Well, I don't know about his Halloween plans really, he hasn't made many it seems, but I do know it won't be kilted. 1 kilted would be expensive, and he associates kilts with people in my past, people he doesn't want to be compared to.

The basic Kilt from 21st Century kilts (Scotland), for around 325 pounds, then design your own steampunk. I work in a hardware store, the clips, fasteners, brackets, and I use a pulley for my sporran closure. My kilt is a homemade in black denim fabric from the closeout bin.
