Black Watch tartan kilt wearers- question:

My dad wants a kilt, so I'm outfitting him with a Black Watch from Stillwater Kilts for Christmas. So my question is- what is the preferred color of hose to go with the tartan? I don't wear it myself, so I've never given it any thought! Any help would be appreciated.

***EDIT*** Scratch the Black Watch thing- I just noticed that Frugal Corner has Hunting Stewart tartan. My dad has a tam in that tartan, so I now need advice about Hunting Stewart and matching hose!

I have both a SWk Black Watch and a Hunting Stewart. The greens are considerably darker in the BW than the HS. I really prefer to match the green in the kilt with green hose. IMHO darker hose look better - even black. But that's just me.

I would also try to at least complement the kilt with flashes.

    P.S.

Steal the tam and burn it.

    Buy him a good balmoral.

That tam should never be worn with the kilt. OUCH! Basically the Kilt Police frown an any tartan above the kilt. I have caught more he(( over my matching tartan neckties. i now save the tartan ties and tartan flat caps for wear with the business suit... In other words they will probably never get worn as I kilt before I suit.

I'm working on an outfit that will send the Kilt Police into seizures... My wife loves my idea, and so does one of this boards kilt makers. I ain't concerned with the KP's. I will wear my tartan ties with my kilts if I please. Also, it's not such a strange concept. There was a time when people would wear as much tartan as possible- I've even seen pictures of people wearing 3 or 4 different at the same time! And I mean paintings from the 18th century.

Wearing many different tartans at the same time does go back a long way, I grant you. I wonder, these pictures that you have seen where this happens, are the people wearing different tartans of the SAME clan, or, are they wearing tartans of DIFFERENT clans? Could you point me in the right direction so that I can study these pictures? I may not have seen them all.

The kilt police take meds for the seizures. Go ahead. It gives us something to talk about.
