X-Kilt measurement question
Hi All,
My Mom is working on a khaki kilt for me using the x-kilt instructions that I found here but I have a question about the measurements. At one point it talks about the waist measurements (taken around the belly button or so) and the rump measurements (taken at the widest point around the but) The instructions tell you to focus on the rump measurements when figuring out the pleats not the waist.... My problem is my waist measurement is 48" and my rump is 43"... I know, I'm a freak... Should we just use the 48" figure and basically make a kilt that's a tube? I don't see an issue with this. I was looking at my tank and it is basically the same shape, with rump region maybe being slightly larger, maybe...
Thanks

For traditional kilts, the largest measurement is used wether it is the waist or the hips.

Yup, if your waist measurement is more than the hips, use the larger number to work out the pleats. But unless your butt is completely flat, the kilt will fit better if tailored around the curve from the bottom of the fell to the waist. Basically you take the waist measurement as instructed and for the rump you measure imagining the kilt hanging straight down from the widest point of your belly. That way you'll get a rump measurement larger than the waist anyway, and will probably be very confused.
Don't worry, I'm sure someone with experience in this will fly in very shortly and tell you exactly what to do. It's almost midnight here, so I'm not feeling very clear...

This is supposed to be simple. So yeah, make it a tube the size of your waist measurement, forget the taper.
Wear it for a while. Buy mom flowers and tell her you love her. She rocks, if she's making you a kilt. After a couple of months you'll learn if it doesn't fit quite right and then you can make adjustments for a second one, if it comes to that.
If the first one isn't PERFECT, it's OK. It just should be wearable. I wear clothes all the time that aren't PERFECT, including my own X-Kilt which I so-happen to be wearing today. Part of the point here is to learn about kilts.

There have been several discussions here about people who say that their rump and waist measurements are the same (or rump is smaller than waist). Here's a suggestion for dealing with it, if you wish.
Put on a pair of pants. Measure from side seam to side seam around the FRONT of your waist. Then measure side seam to side seam around the REAR of your rump. Total these two measurements.
Use that total for your rump measurement. This should allow the front aprons to fall straight down from your navel toward the floor.
