    Gifts in the mail.

    Good day rabble,

a couple of weeks ago my brother mentioned to me that he was starting to get back into leather working. At that time, he was working on a black-powder possibles bag for my father. I mentioned in joking that it would be great if he could make a black rob roy sporran for me at some point and then didn't think anything else of it.

    Today a rather large box appeared from where my brother resides and lo and behold, look what was contained there-in;

This is his interpretation of a rob roy sporran! I have to admit, I LIKE IT. The leather is for the bag is smooth and supple and the flap is very stiff. The carving is a celtic raven with my initials stamped into it. This is going to get quite a bit of wear!

The other thing in the box was a huge surprise...

He decided to make a Targe for me. This this is a very large item and it fits my mammoth forearms quite well. He covered it in a deep red leather and the brad pattern is from a targe found at the battle of Glenlivet See Here The backing is calf-skin and the seam is covered in a strip of the MacKinnon modern tartan. Talk about a gift for a king!

Now I have to decide where to hang this thing and how I talk my wife into letting me purchase that basket hilt sword I have been lusting after.

What a great gift from my brother... I think I will hang onto him for a while yet.

(by the way, he has asked for any input that the rabble would like to leave. I will pass your comments onto him)
"A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

The sporran is truly excellent - your brother has a great talent - for making the rest of us jealous!

    Thumbs up

Ah.. tell your brother he needs more practice... There are a few rabble that would willingly test out his products without charging him for the quality control process..

You are one very fortunate person.

Here here! I would make the sacrifice of letting him practice on something for me.

All I can say about that sporran is- sexy!

Wow Mike. The sporran is excellent. Your brother has some talent.

    Now about that targe....

Let me see if I have this right.......

You'll be wearing that to invade the local liquor store and battle for Glenlivet? If you can get your brother to make a couple more of those Grant and I will fly down in the MapleLeaf and assist you in the reiving.

Nice surprise Mike. I bet the sporran gets loads of wear, a basket hilt will work great with that targe.

Hey, Mike. You can hang the targe in my basement, and I'll provide a baskethilt and a claymore to hang with it. That way you won't have to bother the little woman, and you can drop by my house anytime. I'll even give you a key to the basement door.
