    Kilt Waist Range

I've been hoping to share kilts with my son, who is my height, but about 4" slimmer in the waist. Can a kilt be easily made to accomodate us both, assuming I won't get larger and he will! How would I specify this to a kilt maker?

Generally the limit of variability is determined by the distance between the first and last holes in one of your top straps, usually only 2-3 inches max. Just measure yours to see.

One option would be to buy a kilt to fit your son and then get strap extenders for you, but then he would have to use the strap extenders as he gets bigger and the kilt would be ill-fitting for both of you then.

Another option is have the kilt made to your size, then ask to have the straps/buckles moved in two inches to make the waist narrower than the original design of the kilt would be normally. Then it should fit him at minimum size and may fit you at maximum size, and won't look so bad. If it was not big enough for you you could then use strap extenders to let it out to your waist. The reason this idea is probably better is that after you both reach about the same size you could have the straps repositioned to their original designed locations and the kilt should fit and look good on both of you.

Generally a kilt too big taken in a bit with strap/buckle movement with overlapping aprons looks better than one that is let out with strap extenders, as the latter allows the under apron to show and moves the front apron edge more toward the visible center of your front side.

You could always buy yourself a top-of-the-line custom tank, a garment of which you will have great pride for years to come, and then get your son an SKW model with is just a little bit too big. Then he can wear his longer, and you can wear yours forever--if you don't keep growing like I did.

BTW, why wouldn't you both want to wear the kilt together. The above recommendation I made would allow for that.

    Oh, good ideas here. Thanks.
I think we would want both to go kilted, perhaps one with Ancient MacBean, and one with Modern (guess which I am). But, may I ask, is an SKW?

I think he meant SWK, Macbean, Stillwater Kilts is an advertiser on XMTS and maker of a less-expensive kilt than the 8-yard-Strome that you may be dreaming of for yourself Go for the best you can afford for you because that's forever and it will one day be passed on to your son (and perhaps his son); get him, also, the best you can afford, and compare the advertisers on this site to that end.

I agree with these two gentlemen, 100%. Get two kilts. A tank for you, and an SWK for the lad. Can't go wrong with that one, I think.
