    Animals die the natural way

I know some folks get pretty edgy about humans who kill animals. My wife was like that until she found out just what 'dying the natural way' really meant for wild and feral animals!

    Here is an eyeopener:

A study was done regarding whitetail fawn mortality at South Carolina's Savannah River Site. 60 newborn fawns were radio-collared. 44 of 60 (73%) fawns died before they were 10 weeks old. Apparently 85% of these fawns were killed by coyotes (eaten alive).

There are worse ways to die that are also in the "natural way". The lucky ones that die "naturaly" are culled from the herd via predators, the unlucky ones die of starvation when the population exceeds the level of sustainability of an area.
    Just a perspective.

I'm a hunter, and obviously I've had to have such conversations with many people who do not support hunting. I think too many people have this rosy picture of how the natural world is. Many people argue against me taking the life of a deer which I intend to eat, and seem to forget the almost certainty that animal would die anyway...from predation, hunger, or disease.

Here's a little side note. I'm a veterinarian and I HATE to see animals "die the natural way" even of old age and disease. I believe strongly in euthanasia when the suffering exceeds the joy of life and there is nothing further to do.

Back to your regularly scheduled program...

    Be well,

The mortality among the coyotes is undoubtedly larger; carnivores usual game plan is to have larger litters than the prey animals will support; if the prey animals undergo a boom, the pups all survive and can capitalize on the bounty and if they don't then the weakest pups die once mom stops nursing them and they cant take food away from the biggest pup.

OK, while it's true that this is the off topic section of the forum.
And it is true that this topic does not violate a rule.

Is this really appropriate subject matter for a kilt forum?
Is this what we want to talk about?

How about we just let this thread die a natural death.
