sporran straps made by harness maker

I have just received some excellent sporran straps made to my specs by Greg Woods, of Conneaut, Ohio. I found him through eBay:

The straps are made of very nice bridle leather, with heavy brass hardware. They ended up costing around $25 each delivered. He will make whatever you want. He used 1 inch leather for the back belt section and then 1/2 inch sections for the front. If you don't make your own, you might try his...

Any pics MacLL? How does the strap attach? I'm going to be making my own in the near future...always up for new designs and ideas.

some day my prints will come

    Sorry, no pictures today.

I am not currently image-enabled at this location. I drew a diagram which I sent him. It starts with a dog collar, more or less, chopped in two: You have two pieces of 1 inch strap, one with a buckle and the other with holes. At the other ends of these you have D rings to which are attached a length of 1/2 inch strap with a clip. The trick is to give yourself enough adjustability without making the back section overly long.

Probably the best arrangement is to start with your actual waist size as the first hole and then build in about 8 inches of expansion room/ drape-drop allowance. Chances are that will be plenty.

I have never personally experienced chain wear from a sporran strap, much less the chewing-up that I have read about from fancy chains, but I like the leather. Using D rings and clips gives you a couple of flex points so the whole thing is more comfortable. And the half inch strips in the front are plenty strong enough. They have enough body to lie flat where thong might twist around.

And nobody wants a twisted thong, believe me.
