Would YOU wear another "clan's" tartan?
Hi guys.
I'm very curious as to what you all find appropriate as to clan relations (or not) and tartans?
I've made a wee poll on the thread as polls have always helped me get a good idea of the general feelings on the forum. I'd appreciate if you could vote on it and perhaps even leave a reply with your views on whether you wear only clan tartans of those within certain aspects of your bloodline, or if you would wear any clan tartan affiliated with any surname in your family tree, or finally if you wear any clan tartans for any other reasons such as you like the tartan's colours or sett.
Personally, I have a couple of kilts in clan tartans to which I have no known affiliation to simply because I like the tartans. One of them is actually my girlfriend's clan tartan - Robertson and I bought it because it's such a beautiful tartan. My dad is called Robert, though
Also... as a side comment; how do you feel about corporation tartans, and if corporations using a clan tartan in company use?
Thanks for your opinions (which I'm sure will follow!),
Paul

It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

I have not, nor will I ever wear a tartan, other than my own.

I just got a poll sorted. I believe you're option #1 then!
I respect that you would only wear your own clan's tartan. I have friends with similar opinions and I think they're right in their own way.
How do you feel about company/corporation tartans and if a company uses a particular clan tartan in its marketing or services?

I suppose over the years I have resigned myself to the fact that some clan tartans have been used for marketing.I can't say I like the idea much, but perhaps a deal has been done with the Clan Chief, I know not. I have no problems with company/corporation tartans as long as I was not made to wear one. In truth that situation has never arisen in my case.On the other hand, had I served in a Scottish Regiment, then I most certainly would be proud to wear their tartan------ whilst I served with them.

Ok, I catch your drift. Especially since some of the Scottish Regiments formed from actual clans.
As far as corporations using tartan I'm happy when it's used wisely - even in Lothian buses, as it's an endorsement - or at least a use of something Scottish! There's tartans for just about everything now anyway as well!
As far as my ancestry, I do not know my direct male line's name. Many would say I therefore should not wear the tartan related to the name carried over from my great grandmother (I don't at the moment anyway), and perhaps not wear any clan tartan at all. Even if I found the roots of what my "real" surname would have been, I really don't think I'd feel a connection at all.

Thanks for your opinion, Tom. What do you make of corporation tartans and would you wear one if you have a strong affiliation e.g. Kenneth being clergy, or if you were part of an orginisation with a tartan?

Corporation and any other tartans are fine if an individual wants to wear them?? I'm afraid they're just not for me!! My wife asked me to go along to get measured for a new kilt as a bithday present about five years ago, I assumed I was getting a new Cameron tartan (my own Clan) unfortunately she ordered the Paisley tartan (district) the town where we reside! I'm not a Buddie (native of Paisley) I'm a born and bred Glasgow man, the kilt has lain in my wardrobe since it arrived, stupid I know!! but for me its Clan or nothing!!

I prefer a tartan that I have a strong connection to but, sadly, that is the Buchanan which is not one I would even like to be seen dead in.

It must be a real bummer if you insist on only wearing your clan tartan and nothing else and it's one you don't like It seems very restrictive to me.
The Kilt is my delight !

That thought has crossed my mind from time to time. It is a good job I like mine.
