    St. Paddy's in Conyers

I decided to start in early inviting the Great South Eastern Kilt Society to come to Conyers on St. Paddy's Day for the parade and a kilt fest. There will be several places to visit, the street will be closed off, and it's always a lot of fun. People bring their kids, dogs, etc. Anyone who wanted to can just show up and walk in the parade, but there'll be folks who just stand and watch as well.

The parade is only two half-blocks long. Sometimes there'll be a Red Hat Society group, Girl Scouts, etc. Pretty wide open.

I hope the guys and ladies will turn out for an early evening. We can even form our own little parade contingent and maybe get our own piper to head the group.

Then we'll go to the Celtic Tavern or some other local establishment for a fine repast and telling of stories. Here's a couple of photos from years past:

    This was two years ago.

This was last year. (Note that my granddaughter had grown! This year she'll probably pull me. )

    Any takers?

Sadly, I will likely be on business travel on the 17th.

It's a possibility! We're not working at camp that day for now.

The parade starts about 4:00 or 4:30, and all the festivities follow the parade. There are likely to be a number of things to do after the parade including cattle reiving, lassie oggling, and great telling of lies.

I would love to see a bunch of the Great SEKS guys turn out. My wife and I always like the day, and our grandchildren come down early for the parade.

Okay, it's getting much closer to St. Paddy's now, so I thought I'd bump this up and see if there isn't someone who wants to come join in the fun. I even have a new pair of hand-made hose to wear. New garters, too.

New hose, huh? Hmmmmm.... Too bad they're the wrong color.

I'd like to attend this event, but since it's about 4 hours away and a school night, I'll just have to enjoy your pictures.

Wrong color? Wrong color? I may be red-green color blind, but they are green aren't they? What's wrong with the color?

I assure you I'll wear the hose if I have to buy a new kilt to match!

Could one of you North American chaps put me in the picture here please? I've seen a lot of Irish related stuff on this site, more so than if this site had it's origins in the UK IMHO. However, if more people find resonance in wearing the kilt then it's fine by me and more power to your elbow. However it seems like a lot of you find St Patrick's day an excuse to 'Kilt up' whether you're Scots, Scots-Irish or just plain Irish, or none of the above. Is this due to a general Pan-Celtic feeling of solidarity or just an excuse to go and have a good time?

St Patrick's day celebrations to my knowledge are actually more on an Irish-American phenomenon and are celebrated with great organisation and effort with a real carnival atmosphere; here in the UK (and dare I say Ireland) it's a wee bit more ambivalent and seen by some as more of an excuse to get drunk and as a unit shifting exercise by the Guinness brewery. Most 'native' Scotsmen wouldn't entertain the event on any level here in the UK.

Sorry if I've hi-jacked this thread, but I'm curious.

    P.S. Have a great St Patrick's day.

In my experience, St. Patrick's Day in the US of A has become a general holiday, meaning anyone who so desires can claim to be Irish or not, and they can wear green, drink plenty of beer, and confuse Ireland, Scotland, Wales and any other nation around the world with any other nation around the world. Some folks use it as a day to educate others about the connections between Ireland and Scotland; others use it as a day for parades and parties. There's not any one answer to the questions listed above. And certainly not everyone in this country even observes the day. Those who do seem to get the attention.
