Needing a sword
Evening folks,
Just got the latest news on my niece's wedding. Not only must I be armed but a sqain dubh and a dagger/dirk isn't enough. All member's of the wedding party must be carrying a sword. That includes my wife the maid of honor (Amy had to delicately explain that she's the matron of honor and not a maiden after 15 years of marriage) in her black strapless evening gown she wants my wife to wear. If we do not provide our own ones will be provided out of the various armories of my family members. Knowing my family if we don't get our own I'll end up wearing a katana and they'll put a claymore across her back.
So I need to find a basket hilt. I am a bit torn on whether I should get a nice one if I ever have to do anything formal again or just a piece a tin that will get me by since I'm not likely to wear it every weekend?
And any recommendations wear to get them?
Thanks for your help,
Jim

I have bought from SwordsOnline.com once before, and had nothing to complain about. They are reasonably inexpensive and of a high quality ( depending on what you buy mind you). If you just need something for dress reasons, I see no reason why not to go with them.

I've got one of those. I actually bought it because I fight competetively and needed something with more weight than a shinai to practice with to build up my arm strength. It looks great (especially for the price!) and is well made. I would not recommend it for blade on blade contact... but it sounds like you probably won't be doing much of that. So go for it!

Tell the Minister you're Cameronians and you can carry firearms as well.

From Jim's description of the wedding party, I wouldn't be too sure!
Seriously, Jim, it sounds like you have a very interesting extended family, and I'll bet the wedding will be fun. Wear a blade, but keep it in the sheath!

Check out Atlanta Cutlery and/or Museum Replicas (http://www.museumreplicas.com/p-197-...-claymore.aspx) online. Two businesses under one roof. They are located near my home (about 3miles), and they have a pretty good selection of swords and fairly reasonable prices.
Or . . . you could go to ebay and buy one right now for about 50 bucks. http://cgi.ebay.com/Steel-40-Scottis...item25590ab201
If you like, I can loan you mine.

Lurk on ebay and you will probably be able to pick up a pukka British military broadsword for between $500-$700.

OK, can you tell me why swords are being worn by the wedding party? Is this a Star Wars/Braveheart/ Fantasy service? That seems a little far-fetched and silly to me, especially when the ladies are being requested to wear them as well.
I hope the clergyman tells you all to remove them before coming into the church.

I have an old toy light sabre I can decorate with tartan on the handle. Would you like that? We can even rustle up a magic wand from an old magic kit! Of course if anyone in the wedding party is a cleric, maces will have to replace swords. Sheesh.
