    First Sporran - Roy Roy

Hi All, for everyone's advice in my question thread HERE, thank you.

Here is my first Rob Roy style sporran. I started with the basic pattern available everywhere online, and made a few modifications.

If you go back and look at my questions thread, you can see a .6 size mock up I made (which was the perfect size for my son).

Moving onto the full size I was able to cover the flap, as well as do a decent hem on the bag's top.

The cabochon and bells/toggles are made of Cocobolo, a very nice African hardwood. This sporran has a nice 'clack' when you walk.

Pictured below against the Baird Tartan

    Against the Wallace Tartan

The colour of the leather is a bit odd and hard to picture, but is truest in the above shot.

And with a load of stuff in it.

I can easily get a wallet, keys, cellphone, sunglasses, ipod, pipe, tobacco pouch, lighter, flask, and still have room to spare.

As always, helpful commentary is more than welcome.

I did learn some things I can't wait to try on #2...

making your own sporrans really is addictive.

Now to find this guy a good home.

Oh, now THAT is a fine looking sporran. Congratulations, I'm sure it'll become your regular for daily wear.

Beautiful! Well done man! As an amature sporran maker myself, I must applaud your workmanship. The stitching is spot on and great choice in leather. May I ask where you sourced it? I cannot find a good supplier near to me, or I have not yet.

Once again, nice work. Keep at it and welcome to the addiction!

Thank you, but I won't be keeping it. I'm making a full mask for myself. This one will be shopping for a new owner.

The hide I used for the bag itself is a one of a kind. It was made as a test piece by a company I used to work for (an Italian leather furnishings co.)

It was one of a series that wasn't picked up for production - the colour was too hard to control from hide to hide so it was presented to the customers with the asterisk that there would be GREAT variation from hide to hide. The customers didn't really like that idea.

It was going to throw it away, along with the the hides testing two other colours. I asked if I could have it (should have tried to get all three... but oh well.)

The interior panels and 'hanger' on the back are from 4-5oz veg tan from Tandy Leather, dyed in a complimentary colour.

What are people's thoughts on the toggles? Too big? I know they're oddly shaped, I wanted to evoke the idea of finger bones. Primitive inspiration/ exotic materials sort of thing. My next one may use some Macassar Ebony I have around.

It's fine around little ones, but keep leather away from 'chewy' dogs
If you're interested the piece, drop me a PM.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

I like the look of the wood, especially the closure piece on the flap. For my tastes. the toggles are a bit large. I hate the drumming effect on a sporran. It amused me for a while but now it is tiresome, as my own creation with ox horn toggles, thumps while I walk. I like the selection of wood so much that I may attempt to find some for my next creation . . . .

To my embarrassment, I mis-labeled the wood. It is Cocobolo, not Zebrano used for the cabochon and toggles.

Serves me right for not looking at my pencil marks on the stock.

I think it looks choice. And your use of the Cocobolo makes it unique, without looking odd, out of place, or over the top.

You should start taking orders, as I'm sure they would be much sought after.

    Job very well done!

EDIT: And your stitching is excelent.
