Tapering the fell? Even if REVERSE taper results?

    Hi, Y'all!

I am currently making an X-kilt - sewing it by hand, and have a question regarding tapering the fell... In the instructions, it is assumed that your hips are larger that your waist... however, despite the fact that I am of Irish/Scot/Welsh (among others) extraction, I seem to suffer from that rare Hawaiian disease called "noarseatall"... my measurements (triple checked) are: Waist (at navel): 48" (Comfortable) or 46" (sucked in); Hips: 45"; Fell: 5"; and Drop: 20" Height: 5'10".

If I follow the directions exactly, I believe this will end up with a REVERSE taper...

I intend to do 13 pleats and a 9" (A-shaped to 12" at base) over-apron,to a total of 48" to fit my waist...this will result in a straight taper all the way down...

Any suggestions (other than losing weight)?

    Thanks.

Just speaking for a trad kilt, you'd never do a reverse taper. If the hips are smaller than the waist, you'd just use the same measurement for the hips as for the waist.

There's been discussion of this in other threads. For example, check this post, and the thread it sits in. There are various ways to measure so that your aprons will fall straight down from your navel while the pleats hug your rumpus. Have fun and be sure to show us how it works out!
