"Garish" Tartans

The more kilts I see the more I enjoy the "louder" tartans out there. I'm not adept enough to name more than a handful however, but these three immediately came to mind (obviously MacLeod).

MacMillan Dress

MacLeod Dress

Buchanan Modern (comparatively speaking, not nearly as stark as the other two, but still has been referred to as "too loud" by some...)

Does anyone have other examples of nice, bright tartans?

I don't know anymore right off hand but I am a proud owner of a cotton Macmillan Dress 8 yarder, hand sewn by the kiltmakers apprentice. Its the one im wearing in my avatar. It is one of my family's tartans but I personally like it. I'm sure there are a few more. You may want to try browsing The Scottish Tartan Authority site.

*** for Dress MacMillan, although our main clan tartan, Old MacMillan, isn't too subtle either...

Hey all,

Galloway (District) Red can be rather hard on the eyes as well. I own a swatch of this and I can not imagine having a kilt made in this tartan:

If I cross my eyes, the blue squares appear to float in front of the monitor.

I've got a set Crayola "3D" glasses here left over my M'Lady's presentation at Toys-R-Us.... It makes warm colors stand out and dark colors seem to fall back. Couldn't resist sliding those on and looking at that tartan...

... Must be what drugs are like....

I bought a length of this tartan some time ago at an extremely good price. It seemed a good idea at the time, since my patrilineal ancestors came to the colonies from Galloway, albeit some 300 years ago. One of these days, at a time when I have more money than sense, I will probably have a kilt made of it, and have been thinking of pleating it to the stripe with the blue and purple showing, and the red and purple inside the pleat so that the latter flashes when walking.

It is something. The swatch I have has the blue looking nearly purple and it is very vibrant all around. Definitely not something to wear if you are looking to be inconspicuous.
