Just a small incident yesterday I thought I'd share...'cause that's what we do here..

I wore my black workmen's utilikilt on the long drive from Memphis to my job yesterday afternoon, and on the way, I thought I'd stop at a truck stop in northern Mississippi for a snack. It was crowded, and as it was a rural setting, I suspected full of some of the more colorful backwoodsy types.

I remembered someone here speaking of "baptism by fire" of going to Wal-Mart kilted, and my own advice I always say about, "if you're gonna be a bear, might as well be a grizzly". So, I held my head up high and headed for the door.

Soon as I walk in the door, there's a guy there, (American - of African decent), and first thing I hear is, "What the h3ll is going on here?". I chose to ignore that and pick up my stuff when he walks by and says to me, "You must be Irish." I didn't really think about it at all, and just popped off the first thing that came to mind, "Scottish". He said, "Oh."

And that was it. I suppose he was happy with that as an explanation for the kilt.

Not that I'd be too worried about his opinion, seeing he was wearing some hot pink nylon pants belted around his lower thighs, but I just thought the whole thing strange.

You know, I get the R U Irish or Scottish thing on a regular basis. It annoys me, my answer has been, yes, Scottish, but that's not why I like kilts. I like them simply for what they are, call me a kilt aficionado. Then, if they are wearing jeans, I will sometimes ask if they are a cowboy (or girl).

Bottom line is it really doesn't matter what other people think. Do you imagine that everyone else is concerned about what *you* are going to think if they wear their earrings? Their tight jeans, their tattoos? Not bloody likely!

I've gotten the "Scottish?" or "Irish?" thing a time or two myself. I usually just say yes, or something similar if I'm busy. In research of my family crest, I have found my last name is Irish, but obviously that has no bearing on my wearing the kilt. (There's more French blood on that side than Irish...)

I'd never given it much thought, but when that guy asked the question, "Scottish" just popped out...I guess subconsciously, I must've been ready for it...

Like I said, wasn't a big deal, just strange. Struck me odd that somebody who would wear pink pants down around his knees would "scoff" at somebody in a kilt. Amazing.

(Always fun to see who understands the difference)

Sometimes followed with "Don't hafta, not gonna."
Or "My girlfriend likes it, and that's all that matters!"
