Smile How do you deal with a pocket watch when kilted?

First off, I mainly wear sports kilts, and only infrequently wear a traditional.

I suppose it's a tacit protest to my high tech job, but I usually carry a big old Elgin pocket turnip (per the serial number, made in 1894) on a cheap stainless steel watch fob.

I've been tempted to add a watch pocket and fob attachment hole on the apron of the kilt, but I hesitate to do that.

    Anyone have a better suggestion?

well... I don't suppose you'd consider dressing in a manner a bit more conducive to wearing a pocket watch... like a traditional kilt, waistcoat and jacket? If that's a no-goer, you could get a pocket watch pouch that sidles onto your belt...

I have a nice pocket watch with a Thistle on it that I wear in place of a wristwatch sometimes. It has a chain about a foot long with a bar across the end opposit the watch.

If I'm wearing a vest, I put the watch in one pocket (right side), then pull the chain through a button hole on the vest and put the bar into the left pocket. That is pretty traditional and secure.

Sometime I just want to wear the pocket watch without a jacket and vest.
Then I tuck the watch inside the waistband of my kilt (I usually wear a kilt belt so it holds it in place nicely). The other end of the chain I tuck through the leather keeper on the right side of the kilt belt. I let the chain drape over the outside of the kilt. It's kind of like wearing the watch in the watch pocket of jeans.

I like the feeling of taking the watch out of the waistband (it's nice and warm) opening it to check the time, and then tucking it in again. Sort of reminds me of my granfather and great-grandfather and slower, less hectic times.

I don't have a picture, but perhaps the description above is enough. It works for me.

The seller is sold out, and the latch is a bit overmuch, but if you're going luddite, go big, eh?
I imagine there are leathercraftsmen around XMTS that could build to suit...

I love that!! I have 2 of those latches in the mail to me right now. I was trying to decide what to do with the second! That's brilliant!! I'm going to make one of those for my camera!

There's a fellow on another forum that has a fob attachment (not sewn) to his kilt for his pocket watch. I don't have that for myself, but when I wear a waistcoat with my kilt, I put my pocket watch in one of the small pockets and use a sterling silver double Albert watch chain with fob from which to hang the timepiece.

Well I suppose the fact that you asked the question means that you don't wear a waistcoat. If that's the case, then simply use your jacket breast pocket and feed the chain bar through the buttonhole on your lapel.

I wear it across the waistcoat with the chain through a button hole or I keep it in my sporran without the chain.

I wear a wrist watch. Is this a big no-no?

I would go with a pocket watch holster or pouch on the belt. Adding a pocket or similar to the fabric of the kilt would not seem to me to be the best approach. I like the idea of the pocket watch though. Nowadays many of us wear the modern day version - it's called a cellphone. Not nearly as nice as your Elgin
