    Stillwater Heavy weight

I just looked up some old threads pertaining to Stillwater Kilts, but did not quite find what I wanted concerning Jerry's heavy weights. I loved, for a first kilt, his standard acrylic....can't beat it for the price. Yes, it doesn't compare to my tank, but the money difference is huge. And, his service is excellent, so I'll go back to him for a heavy weight wool.

My question is: does anyone have his heavy weight wool? If so, I'd love to hear all about it, like its weight, pleat maintenance, swing, etc. Whatever advice you can give, I'll greatly appreciate it.

Since posting this thread, I did find some great info on the Stillwater heavy weight. However, if you want to add, go ahead!

I'll chime in, I've had two SWK wool kilts, a "Weathered Lamont" that I sold to a member here, and a Saffron "shadow tartan" that I still wear from time to time.

If you like the fit, construction, and finsh of the Stillwater 'standard" acrylics you'll be quite pleased with the wool version, as they are put together and sized pretty much exactly the same way. The wool material is about 12-13 oz, so it's heavier than the acrylic, but the wool has a smoother finish and less bulk. To me this is really noticable in the fell, where there seems to be less "pillow" effect of the overlapping pleats compared to the acrylic.

The heavier material gives a better hang, swish, and wind resistance, as well as being much more wrinkle resistant than acrylic.

Z, thanks for 'chiming' in! I've already taken the plunge and ordered a heavyweight in Black Stewart.

If you have a standard, the construction is the same for the wool, as Zardoz says. It is a looser weave than typical kilt fabric.

If you have issues with the first pleat and apron edge flipping forward on your Stillwater, there are ways to fix that. If not, don't worry about it.

The wool does seem to behave better than the acrylic over time.

I have one, Its a nice lightweight kilt for wearing around when you dont want to risk your better ones. Mine gets alot of use I dont think I would buy another one exept to replace this one if the worst should happen.
But youeah I do like it and I would say most of the time it is the one I pick for day to day.
