    Brass cantle for today?

    In the historical section, there has been talk of brass cantles.
    This has me wondering;

    If worn today, would they be considered for day use, or evening wear?....
    Normally we would expect 'silver' for evening......yet we consider no metal as fairly normal for daytime, so where do you think they would fit?

    Any thoughts ?
    Thanks in advance!

    My personal thoughts on this are that metal cantles are fine for any time of day - it's when you mix metal cantles with hair or fur that you start pushing your way to formal evening wear (though this shouldn't stop you from wearing a fur sporran during the day if you so choose).

    That said, the brass cantle certainly brings it down a bit in formality. I'd say a nice fur sporran with a brass cantle would be the happy medium between a hunting sporran with silver cantle and a full dress sporran; so it would be perfectly acceptable for semi-formal evening wear and good for any time of day.

    Though I'll add my usual disclaimer that I'm certainly no expert in these matters!

    One size fits all so far as I'm concerned. Here's mine which I wear on all occasions just changing the remainder of my dress to suit the occasion.

    I'm in the process of having two brass cantled sporrans made for me (which I hope will be done next week). Both have a cantle exactly like Peter's above. One will have seal fur and the other a very light color buff leather bag. The fur one I imagine I will wear for evening wear, while the leather one I will use for day wear. However, I see no reason why I couldn't wear either of them any time. I'll be sure to post pics when they come in.

    I currently own a brass cantled sporran with a different design cantle and dark brown leather bag. I tend to use it for day wear, not evening wear, but I'll wear it for varying degrees of formality in my day dress, as seen below.

    I'm not really one to say "yellow metal for day, white metal for evening." I know this is the general rule of thumb for many, but I see no real reason why someone cannot wear brass or gold for evening wear -- people already often wear silver, nickel, or chrome for day dress these days anyway. I'll often wear both white and yellow metals at the same time. To be honest I don't really give the color of the metal a thought in this regard.

    Is someone out there 'off-loading' these MOD1953 cantles? I can't ever seem to locate them, either from eBay or military collectibles dealers.

    Matt have you got a secret stash of these cantles somewhere? As Artificer said, there never seems to be any on ebay or in military auctions.

    I can remember, after searching the forum, reading that you had a couple on top of the one you sent me.
