Kiltmaking in South Africa
Hi all!
I'm in South Africa for a geo conference, and I brought along a couple kilts to work on. Thought I'd share a couple of kilt-in-progress portraits from the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site:

The general scenery of the bushveld in South Africa:

And why it's not a good idea to wander around in the grass....not just pesky things like rattlesnakes...

Yikes, no snakes, please!!!
Great pics, Barb. Guess one day I'll have to have you make me a kilt, not just because you're talented, but I want my kilt made in some exotic place.

Yea! Another kilt-making-travelog! I love these.
Do we know the lucky future owner of the pictured kilt?

I'd make a quick getaway from there before some member asks about a Warthog full mask sporran...it's bound to happen...
I am jealous, though...you seem to get to the most interesting places in the course of your duties.

Hi, Barb, and welcome to our great country!
Wish I could be up there on the Highveld.
Incidentally, Bushveld is characterised by low trees. That grass you’re looking at is typical Highveld, especially since the frost has killed it! It will revive when the summer thunderstorms start up.
I am sure my son would love to be at Cradle of Mankind, too, and to discuss whatever it is you are there for.
Unfortunately he is further away from Gauteng than I am (he is in Cape Town), and having just come back from a four-day trip to Cameroon, he is headed for Equatorial Guinea next.
Next time you come to South Africa, we must make a plan to meet up.
Best regards,
Mike

Oops! Thanks for correcting me!

I'd love that!

Artificer I know who the lucky future owner is, me! When Barb sent me an email a few days ago letting me know that she had my kilt with her in South Africa to work on while she was there I asked if she had any pictures. I thought that the scenery might contrast nicely with the pictures of Iceland. The kilt is being made from a piece of BlackWatch regimental weight tartan which I purchased off of Ebay last winter. I know a few other members here also purchased some of this discontinued cloth.
Barb, thanks for posting the photos, and please do keep your distance from the cobras. I don't know what we'd do if we lost you to those pesky snakes. Can't wait to get to wear my new kilt!

I am green with envy!
Both for the kilt, and for getting to see it's fabrication in awesome travelog form.
BTW: Barb, for Standard's, and everyone's sake, please do steer clear of the poisonous snakes

Hey Barb!
If you run into a prof from Rhodes University by the name of Steve Prevec, say hi for me.
