Beaver tail sporran

I found a tanned beaver tail at a gun show awhile back,the texture and feel of the leather is really unique.

I kept thinking of a use for it and this is what I came up with.

the beaver tail really makes an unique flap

The leather I had was a little thin so I lined it.
The bag is made of brown calf skin that lined with tan deer hide

bag is 8"x9' with a 4 inch gusset
button is deer antler
drawstrings are braided calf with antler beads

I don't know if I'll be keeping this one for myself or trying to find it a home.
I do have plans for the rest of the beavertail and will post as soon as I get it done

You know, I was visiting with one of my cousins recently who's having a beaver problem at the lake on his property. We were coming up with interesting uses for beavers, and sporrans definately came up. We even joked about using the tail for the flap...

Little did we know how fantastic it could end up looking!

That is a very clever design. A reptilian look to it, but then the twist - it's not! And as you say - unique. The more I look at it the more I like it.

I really like the way the edge of the beaver tail looks rolled where it is stitched.

Very good Joe. I have a beaver tail SOMEWHERE in one of three freezers around here- can't find it for the life of me. It is a big tail, and I planned on making a sporran out of the tail with a piece of beaver hide for the flap, a reverse of what you did here. I have simply GOT to find that tail..........
