    First Kilt for 11yr old?

My son who is 11yrs wants to get a kilt. His school has an ethnic heritage day, and he wants to wear a kilt. He states he would also wear it around the house, and at family gatherings. I want to encourage him in this, but don't want to spend a lot of money on this first kilt (just in case he doesn't like wearing it.) I've found one on Kiltmart for around 39.00. Anyone know if these are any good? He has to wear a size 32 so it seems the children sizes are out of the question. Thanks!

    Two words: StillWater Kilts!

    EDIT: $17 - ~$20

Second edit: it's all in the childrens accessories, obviously. Sporrans and chains too!

If he's a size 32 he's too large for the children's thrifty. A regular thrifty is only $28-30, but looking at SWK's site, Jerry seems to be out of the smaller sizes in nearly all the thriftys.

Your other bet might be eBay.

EDIT: you posted your 'oops' while I was entering my post.

Happens to the best of us Artificer

However, back on topic - eBay is a great alternative, however you may want to refine your search on there from simply "kilt" to something like (including the quotation marks) "mens kilt -costume -skirt -leather -vinyl -mini" ... if you don't put in the (-whatever) you will get some very... strange results... such as men's super mini "kilted" undies... Pictures were things I can never unsee...

    Kilts

    Froody,

Another option is Buyakilt.com. They have 8 yard PVs (though not as nice of PV as Marton Mills) for about $60 US with quick and cheap shipping. I own one and am very happy with it, especially for the cost and its functionality.

    Happy shopping

    I forgot to post this earlier;

Make sure you take your son's actual measurement at the navel. Wearing a size 32 could mean anything from 32" to 37", at least in adult sizes. Kilts run TRUE measurements.

It would be a bad start kilting for him if he ordered, waited and then found the kilt to be a bad fit.

    Good luck!

I've been checking out the recommended sites, and searching this great site.Wow there is a lot of options!

@Toxel87, I wish I had read your post about eBay before I went there.....I'm not sure what my son is supposed to be wearing under his kilt, but it isn't going to be some of the items I saw there ... lol!

I measured him and his waist is 32.5inches. We went to the Renaissance Festival today, and he tried on a kilt at the Celtic Shop. The 32" seemed to fit.

At this point I'm leaning toward the SWK in Royal Stewart with a sporran and belt. Seems like it would run about 95.00 so not to bad price. Thanks to everyone for being so helpful and welcoming!

Hi all, just wanted to give an update. We received my son's kilt from SWK today, along with a sporran, belt, and surprise flashes. They are awesome, he loves it!! Looks great, and I have to say they have unbelievably fast shipping. I didn't think we'd have the it for the Celtic Festival this weekend, it's wonderful that we will! I will try to post some pictures. Thank you all for all the excellent advice!

Looks great! Glad to see that your lad is so interested in kilting. If you can, might I recommend hemming it up some? The bottom should fall to the top of the knee (or the middle... or the bottom... pick your poison), but looks like it's a wee bit long here.

    Welcome to XMarks, btw!
