Lecture series in Vancouver
Simon Fraser University's School for Scottish Studies has announced its Fall series of lectures. The first of these is:
"John Knox, Writer": 7:00-8:30, Thursday, September 30, 2010: Room 7000, SFU Harbour Centre, 515 W. Hastings Street, Vancouver- free public lecture, registration not required
John Knox (c. 1514-72) was the "author" of the Scottish Reformation in a double sense of the word: as the spiritual leader of the Protestant movement and as the author of an historical narrative which came to be regarded, albeit on partisan grounds, as the definitive account of Scotland's change in religion. Dr. Niall MacKenzie will talk about the artistic properties of Knox's History of the Reformation in Scotland, the circumstances surrounding its composition, and its influence.
Niall MacKenzie received his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2004 and was I.W. Killam Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the UBC Dept. of English from 2006 to 2008. His essays have appeared in Scottish Language, Scottish Gaelic Studies, The Review of English Studies, and elsewhere.
