This weapons control is starting to get ridiculous... people are going to assault people one way or another whether guns, knives, clubs, broken bottles, baseball/cricket bats are illegal or not. As far as I'm concerned, the skian dubh is a part of dress, not a weapon to be used to slash someone or their tires or anything else. Perhaps remove a stray thread hear and there, but good grief, it's the same concept as a pocket knife IMHO...

This is a two year old article... The mentioning of Gordon Brown gave it away for me. ;)

Aye,
I was under the (possibly false) impression that the Sgian was protected as part of a National Dress type ruling.

It is in Scotland. Not sure about England, though.

I got into trouble for bringing my Sgian into Heathrow in '99 @ customs.
Thankfully, I'm Scottish (read UK Citizen) and the 'National Dress' argument worked.

Insanity. Even though you can wear a sgian dubh in Scotland, it's still insanity. Carrying a knife is not about carrying a weapon, for most. It's a tool, and a very useful one for peaceful purposes.

The man is obviously an idiot and is trying to stir up controversy where there is none.
Christopher Hope
Christopher Hope joined The Daily Telegraph in October 2003. Since then he has been Business Correspondent, Industry Editor, Home Affairs Correspondent, Home Affairs Editor and is now Whitehall Editor.
The article was written in 2008, so in the five years that he has worked for the Daily Telegraph he has had five different jobs - that tells me all I need to know about his journalistic standards and the quality of his work.
For the record, any knife with a blade of 3 1/2 inches or less is allowed under the Criminal Justice Act. Blades of a longer length can quite legally carried if the person can show 'just cause'. A tradesman carrying a knife, with a 7 inch blade, during working hours would raise no concerns. On the other hand a 17 year old with a craft knife, with a blade of 1 1/2 inches, at 10:00 at night would soon have to answer a lot of questions.
Regards
Chas

I can't say that I am surprised. I got kicked out of English pub, in The Woodlands, Texas for having a sgian dubh on a kilt night (we called them Scottish Invasions in the Houston area). AND, I have a concealed carry permit!
