Seeking "Kilted at the Beach" Experience?

Attending a wedding this weekend at Mexico Beach (Florida), or rather ON Mexico Beach, and the wifey really wants me to wear the kilt (and I usually aim to please in these cases):

Gut feeling is sand+wool does not equal comfourt. Plus it's a SUPER casual wedding, ie down home North Florida style- wedding party will probably be barefoot and the groom may even wear shorts (no camo, though) and they're doing low country boil. I've worn the kilt with flip flops before, but my feelings are mixed on how well that really works for me. Balancing kilt formality with Southern laid back settings can be tricky business, if yall smell what I'm steppin' in...

So does anyone else have practical wisdom/experience/advice for being kilted at, and especially ON the beach?

Would guess sand isn't good for wool. Wore a PV USA Kilt's Casual to the beach last spring. Teflon coated, no problem.

I was at the beach a couple of weekends ago, wearing my PV SWK Weathered MacKenzie. I found that a simple shakedown removed any remaining sand.



I wore my brown leather Doc Marten's sandals (which are tres awesome!).

Mucho gratis for the photos and input. Doc Martin sandals would be sweet! Yeah, I'm thinking sand and wool aren't gonna be the best of friends, especially wet sand. Ack. Just imagining the worst...

After checking the weather forecast, I can add the extra twist of it being cold as a weetches teet in an iron bra (high of 65)! And I'm sure there'll be a good breeze going to boot... [Aside: Funny I gotta go the beach for cold weather.] Kilt hose even with boots in the sand seems awkward?

Kilt hose even with boots in the sand seems awkward?

If all you'll be doing is standing and walking in the sand (i.e. you're not going to be sitting down in the sand to build sandcastles, nobody is going to bury you to your neck in sand, you're not going swimming, etc.), I would think it should be fine with boots and kilt hose.

All the beach weddings I've ever seen either have the guests standing or chairs have been provided. I would assume the reception would have chairs provided unless you've been told other wise. Based on that it would seem your probable sand to wool contact would be minimal if any.

It also seems beach wedding attire is usually kahki (tan) bottoms with a white shirt. Going with the casual theme, just wear a white or any other solid color shirt and a pair of nice sandals that can be left by the steps.

Or....pick up a kilt from Stillwater for this occasion and even if something does happen, you've at least got a knock around kilt and protected your formal kilt.

I have never been to a beach wedding, but I used to take my children, many years ago, to the beach often. I wore a traditional wool kilt and had no problem with a dry kilt and dry sand a quick brush down and that was that. A wet kilt and dry sand was not too bad either, as the wool dried the sand just fell off. Salt water and wool was not so good and the trick there was to stand in fresh water wearing the kilt and then hang the kilt to dry naturally from the nearest tree. Failing that, dunk the kilt in cold water in the bath and hang the kilt up in a suitably airy space.
