Next Tank - Looking for an Old, Rare... er, 'Different' Tartan
Dear Rabble: Good Afternoon from sunny Jacksonville, Florida!
Can you help me, please? Financially, I'm ready to pull-the-trigger on my next tank which will be from Kathy Lare. The issue: I'm seeking a tartan that is... well, 'different'. I am VERY partial to autumnal, earthy, hunting tones (love those shades of green!), i.e. Ulster (brown), Lochaber, or County Kerry. Unfortunately, I keep finding examples I've already seen and I'm not prepared to invest in a custom design/weave. So, to more efficiently search for something 'different', does anyone know of a such a tartan? Can any of my 'kiltie cousins' in Scotland reveal some obscure, as-of-yet unrevealed tartan?
Best Regards,
Scott

The Tartan Ferret lets you search by color so you can find a lot of really obscure tartans that may suit your fancy, but then you'd have to try to find a weaver that stocks them. That is going to be the tough part imo.

Scott,
I have records of literally dozens of rare C18th and C19th setts amongst which something would suit I'm sure. PM me to discuss.
Peter

It's a family tartan, but the Henderson Weathered has a nice, earthy look to it:

I have both a Weathered Ulster (8yd knifepleat) and a Weathered Lochaber (5yd, knife pleat) to sell. PM if you're interested.

Tell you what. God willing I will be getting myself a Graham Of Mentieth Weathered kilt soon (to honor Grand-mama) and that is a lovely earth tone and washed blue color. You can see examples on usakilts.com
Good fortune in your search,
Hugh

I'm a fan of earth tones as well. One tartan that has caught my eye lately is the Auld Scotland tartan. With its misty greenish-grey and brownish-reddish colors, it reminds me exactly of what you describe. Those seem to be sort of autumn colors, or at least what I associate with autumn colors. Nice shade of green, too, although people tend to report that it doesn't look exactly like the pictures show it.

See, that's why I like you people! You're resourceful, have great taste and a lovely singing voice (benefit of the doubt). All great responses and possibilities, thank you and keep 'em coming!!!

It's a new Buchanan family tartan that just starting popping up recently called the Autumn Buchanan. I've yet to see it in a kilt but it has caught my eye. Very earthy with just enough of a mossy green to keep me happy.
