Wearing a kilt to work. Underwear or Not?

As I have mentioned in previous posts on unrelated issues, I have just ordered my first Black Watch Kilt and I would like to be able to wear it to work (an office).

This may be a weird question but I was wondering how much the "going commando" or "regimental" rule applies to everyday kilt wearing.

My desk is covered by a front partition and I am mostly sitting there all day (as in I have no latters to climb) but would it be morally wrong not to wear any underwear under a kilt when going to work?

Or is this a matter of etiquette that must be respected. Would I be insulting the Scottish Kilt Gods if I wore underwear. Or is going to a workplace a sufficient reason to wear some...?

Absolutely. The ONLY people who have to wear kilts regimental style are soldiers who are wearing as part of their uniform.

The general rule is, going regimental is required only of those in actually in Regiments.

Civvies can wear the kilt however they want.

But, yeah, often I quietly recommend undies in anything but a hanging out in a pub, or maybe hiking, situation.

    First: Welcome to XMTS!!

To your question: I agree with the Rabble, do as you see fit. However, IMHO, your kilt will thank you in the long run as body oils, etc. tend to affect the fabric after awhile. Also, if your Black Watch will be a Stillwater (SW) Heavyweight the wool can be a tad scratchy - multiply THAT by sitting on it for 8 hours at work! Trust me; I have a SW heavyweight Black Stewart. Anyway, if you choose to wear undergarments, darker colors are recommended.

Well, the kilt is heavy and does stay down pretty much...the kilt pin helps keep the front apron down and the sporran also does it's part in keeping things straightened our...

...but a truly stiff wind can and has lifted the occasional kilt.

One of the other possible interruptions to your dignity can be the smart *** who lifts the kilt just to be funny...it happens.

If it's a worry you shouldn't let it ruin your day; play it safe and just wear some black boxers or whatever...after you've got more of a feel for how the kilt hangs and how to do the "sweep" and sit properly you can make a more informed decision on how to proceed in the future.

And I'll lend you my latest stock answer to "the question" should it be asked:

"Isn't that a rather silly and immature question for a grown man/woman to ask?"

G'luck...remember: we're counting on you! The pressure's on! Don't let the side down!

    Best

I think you've read too many "rules" that don't really exit in the first place.

At the office, especially in a government job such as yours, you need to have all your bases covered. *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*

If you're at work, wear something under the kilt. You never know what could happen, and discretion being the better part. There's nothing manly or gentlemanly in my opinion about flashing a coworker, even accidently, when precaution against such is so easy.

Is it really that easy to flash somebody with a Kilt? I mean you would really have to intentionally lift it all the way up, no?

Or does it just fly up with the least amount of wind?

Depends on the kilt. A lightweight, low-yardage kilt could be blown up in the back in a stiff wind. Hopefully your sporran will keep it down in the front.

A heavy (16 ounce or more) 8-yard kilt, though, won't get blown up unless you're in a tornado or hurricane. Or in a freakishly odd place where the wind is tunneled into an updraft.

The main risk for exposure is when sitting, standing up, or bending over. And like I said, if you learn how to do it right, it's no worry.

Also, make sure co-workers don't get any ideas of horseplay like lifting your kilt or using mirrors or anything else juvenile.

It's a bit academic for me, as the dress code specifies trousers for guys even on casual Fridays, although probably just because whoever wrote it couldn't imagine a guy wearing anything else.

Not only that, but I always wear dark briefs, whether kilted or not. FWIW, it seems to me that anything that extends part way down the leg is MORE likely to show under a kilt than briefs are. On top of that, there is also the possibility of an unwanted view up the leg of boxers (oh, the horror), and that can't happen with briefs.

The chance of a kilt blowing up in the wind is the least likely way that anyone will see up your kilt. IME the risk of that is very low, even with the lightest weight kilt. Especially indoors, LOL! It may happen when hill walking or standing on the seafront, but unless those kind of things are in your job description there is no real need to worry about it.

The greatest risk of exposure is when simply sitting down, and even if your desk has a modesty panel for the benefit of the ladies you may well find yourself sitting in other places, e.g. when in someone else's office, or when eating lunch. Climbing stairs is a very high risk activity, but usually you have the option of taking the lift/elevator instead. Of course, if your job requires you to crawl on the floor, then a kilt may not be a good idea, as even assuming the floors are clean it is hard to keep covered up when doing that.

If for some reason I ever wore a kilt to the office, I wouldn't dream of going regimental, but then I wouldn't want to anyway. Nothing in my job involves anything more strenuous than sitting down or walking around, and the stairs only get used if there's a fire drill, so I can't imagine wearing a kilt would be in any way problematic, apart from those pesky rules.
