Wallace Collection Argyle jacket/vest
Greetings,
Does anyone know anything about the company that produces the Wallace Collection clothing products? I am recently in receipt of a brand new Wallace Collection Argyle jacket/vest combination. I have owned a Wallace Collection Argyle jacket/vest in the past and was NOT satisfied with the quality. I had to reinforce the buttons, a pocket seam came undone, and it just felt cheap.... AND the label states the jacket was made in CHINA?? I paid $390.00 USD for the current jacket/vest. Do folks agree that this is too much for this item?
Perhaps the Wallace Collection produces different levels of quality that could justify the higher price of my new one (compared to my previous)?
Finally, can anyone suggest a good quality, UK (or US) manufactured Argyll jacket/vest? The Wallace Collection feels like a cheap knock-off.
Thank you,
Richard

Good Lord, yes!

There will undoubtedly be many replies to this, but I trust Rocky's products. For $330 you can get an Argyll jacket/vest combo, made in Scotland.

Tobus,
Thanks for the reply. I DO hope to receive many replies/advice. If you (or anyone) has this jacket, can you locate a label inside and let me know who made it?
Thanks,
Richard

KiltedMariner, I have a "Wallace Collection" Tweed Argyle jacket and waistcoat I got from Scottishkilts.net (tartanweb) for $290 USD a few years ago. I wear it quite a bit, (it's in 95% of any pictures of me in a jacket on here) and I have not really had any 'quality' issues. Like you, I did feel the need reinforce the buttons, but only after I pulled a couple of them loose on the waistcoat, before I had it let out.
I just looked mine over, and don't see a "made in" label, so it's a mystery where mine may have been made.

Zardoz,
Thanks for your reply. I too had TWO other Wallace Collection jackets. Neither of them had a "Made in China" label. I suspect a) they have just started making the jackets in China or b) the distributor removed the label.
Cheers,
Richard

I have "Wallace Collection" jackets and they are all MADE in the UK (Leeds England). I've never had a problem with quality. Occasionally a customer will loose an errant button, but we're happy to send a replacement.
I'm not doubting what you are saying, only stating my experience. I have seen import jackets and can feel a quality difference in the material and see it in the craftsmanship. The jackets we have bearing the Wallace Collection brand are all high quality. For the price, they had better be!

As I was very curious and the situation concerned me (as a supplier for this brand of jacket, not as the person who SOLD THIS jacket), I contacted the manufacturer. This was the response directly from the owner who I know personally:
"Yes, we toyed around with doing some China made imports and had a few samples made up. They weren't up to our standards and were never supposed to be sold. If any of these have leaked out into the general marketplace, it was by complete accident. Please have the customer contact us directly and we'll arrange for him to return it to us and send him a UK MADE replacement immediately."

I wanted to figure it out for myself and figured I could explain things to another who needed an explanation. It's what I would like someone to do for me if the roles were reversed. Golden rule and all that...
Richard... I'm surprised you found fault with your prior jackets. As I stated, jackets are one thing I've never had issues with (aside from "UK vs. US Sizing" issues, which is easily remidied by ordering 1 size up). Whatever way you go, I wish you luck and hope you get the quality jacket you're looking for.

I've had two made-to-measure argyle jackets made up by Lochcarron, each for less than you paid the middle man. Ordered through my kiltmaker.
