Red-laced brogues/(p)review my attire...

Hi all,

I know the red-laced brogue conversation has come up before. My question now is: Would ghillie-brogues with red laces match in formality with a Montrose doublet?

I am trying to put together my wedding outfit, which would ideally include some nice buckle brogues, but the budget might require skipping them, and going with the ghillies, or a plain black shoe (of which I don't have any matching the formal level of the doublet anyway).

The whole outfit, I imagine to be something like this: (some imagination necessary)

hand-made (Spanish) lace Jabot (made by a member of the new family(Spanish))



velvet Montrose doublet (dark: black, dark green/blue/red?..opinions?)



belt:



kilt Gunn reproduction (Dalgliesh)



(sporran)

diced hose


(with light blue garter ties?)

shoes


So, if (when) my budget runs out, and the shoes aren't possible: Do you think the red-laced brogues would look right with the ensemble above?

Shoes with red laces would be a perfect choice.

I would choose a doublet in either green or blue velvet.

Since the red laces are traditional (and extremely cool) , would you consider another color combination for the diced hose, so as to provide more contrast? Maybe Grey and black or black and the lighter color- I can't tell if it is a washed out blue. Anyway, I think the red laces would look splendid against the charcoal-blue-grey color on the hose. A red doublet would be very special indeed, but I expect you are better off with the blue or black. Do show us what you come up with, please.

I would prefer the buckle brogues over the ghillies, but with red laces, those ghillies are going to look really sharp!
I have a pair of US size 12 buckle brogues for sale. PM me if they would fit you.

I was also thinking of hose in light grey-blue/black. Then with red garters, and of course then red laces. (I was just thinking that the red was somehow more formal)

Yes, I will provide a real "review my attire" once I've got it together.. (although it might be too late for actually taking on suggestions...)

Red laces on ghillie brogues would look quite smart with formal evening attire. If, however, you are proposing to put red laces in a pair of ordinary brogues, I would feel compelled to say-- nay, shout-- "For Gawds Sake, NO!"

Personally, for formal attire, I would advocate a pair of patent leather dress Highland brogues (as worn by officers of kilted regiments), buckled shoes, or plain black oxfords (either highly polished or patent leather). You might also consider a pair of evening pumps with a silk bow (available from Brooks Brothers and others, I'm sure).

Shoes fall into two broad categories: Outdoor shoes (which tend to be "heavy duty" with thick soles) and indoor shoes, which are of lighter construction. Generally speaking all ghillie brogues available in today's market place are outdoor shoes, as they are of heavier construction. This being the case, while they are suitable for day wear, they are less than ideal for either day or evening formal attire.

Were it me, I'd opt for either the evening shoes from Brooks Bros., or the formal Highland brogues (as worn by officers of kilted regiments) for black tie, and go with a pair of well-shined black oxfords for day wear.

Thanks for that, indeed I was thinking red laces in ghillies. Mine don't seem to be as chunky as many I've seen. In fact, to me they seem less clunky than the officers brogues.

I'm pretty sure when MOR refers to "officers' brogues" he means the "bar and buckle" evening variety (which look a bit like "Mary Janes"), not the Sanders pebble grain daywear brogue.

If not, I'm sure he'll straighten us out...
